No exact date has been given

No exact date has been given for the release of 12.0.

It was supposed to be out already but Hurricane Sandy happened, and with the PortableApps office being in New York the release is on temporary hold until services such as internet, heating etc. are back on and are reliable.

For more information you can check out this thread.

Details Status

We posted a Status Update on November 16th after the hurricane with all the details. It was posted to the homepage, RSS, Facebook, Twitter, and is on every page of our site. 12.0 Beta 1 is likely to be released today, but not guaranteed (it may not be finished until late tonight or tomorrow morning). And it's only 11am Wink

Release of 12

I was only reading the forum - so now i registered to ask the same question cause i was reading your topic.

In the entry you announced the 28th or 29th but now we have the 30th and nothing happened.
Are you sure the topic is up to date?

Just as when Mozilla announced that a release will happen on Tuesday and it happens Tuesday evening California time (Wednesday for you), our times are based on NY time. You're a full 14 hours ahead of us. Smile

If the release slips for some reason, that topic will be updated.

Timezone

You are right. Or maybe the easiest way is to set a Timezone behind the Date (i don't know the right one for New York) but i think the people here (which do very great work) knows the best.

So no stupid questions about a release date of something will be here again Smile

Hi Kate, Don't Look at the

Hi Kate,
Don't Look at the Date they announce, cause After you lookend at it they change ist again.
The First Release should be the 31th Oktober, ok sandy crashed the Date on the 28th. 3 days before Release
After that everything was working again in the mid of November.
so if i take the 20th plus 3 days it should be the 23th for release.
The New announcement was the 27th? The Release should be ready 3 days before Sandy! So i assume that they hadn't released it in the 31th of November Even when no Hurricane where there.

And now the 1th December. But i Think it will be the 10th january or even later.
So Dates are like smoke on the water.
I personally think they should not set a date if they can not Release it on that day and they don't get questions.

Sandy

Tom, we started prepping for Sandy before Sandy and were without internet, phone, mobile phone service or open local roadways for 2 weeks. It took us over a week to catch up on non-PA.c stuff after that as well as catch up on non-development business stuff. Then we decided to take a few days off to have Thanksgiving (like normal people). All the while, we've been keeping the site running (and upgrading out of date CMS modules), nearly 300 apps up to date, regularly releasing new apps, and keeping our millions of users apprised of what's going on. We weren't even able to get time to continue working on the beta code until this week. We're still dealing with unreliable power and internet as a result of Sandy today.

Today, I'm doing some paid work so I can pay my rent and pay to keep PA.c running (since PA.c is still very negative for the year and I pay the difference out of my personal funds). The other option is to finish the platform today but not pay the web hosting bill or my rent, but I think you might be disappointed with the end result from those choices. Blum

Yes, it's frustrating that we had to push things back. Yes, it sucks that we had to push this date back a couple times. And I am very sorry we had to do that. But you don't have to get mad. Don't worry, we assume you're only frustrated out of love. So we won't hold it against you. Smile

Hi John,
i think you should keep cool.
You and your Team and all the Voluntiers do a very very great Job.

I am new here - cause i used a other portable Software suite before - but i am more and more impressed from portableApps. Thanks for your work.

Keep up the good work

John - Please know that the work you are doing on the PA project is phenomenal. And what's better yet is that you offer it for free. I personally don't have any problems waiting for 12.0 (although I'm anxiously waiting with anticipation). What is also amazing is how few bugs I see in the PA menu. It goes to show you that you're better off taking your time and doing things right the first time.

Keep up the good work!!

Al .... Smile

A Very Fair Point...

I think it's very easy to forget that John provides PortableApps off his own back (+ other volunteers) and out of his own pocket (less donations) to keep PortableApps on the road.

Looking after yourself and family is the first priority, because nothing's going to be happening if you are on the street.

I think we (the user community) are just chomping at the bit to try the file association functionality of PA12.0 - that will be the icing on the cake for me.

My earlier contribution of $160 to PortableApps will be winging its way back in the next few weeks. PortableApps is too important a project to go the way the French one has done.

Let's just be patient guys.

You are right

I am very new her - and found the project after the french one - has been gone.
But what i ask myself - i always read that John is working on the PA Platform. Is he the only one who code the Main application?

The French one was a little bit closed to the users - so i already see no source code of portable Apps. Can't the community help developing (like sourcecode on github and so on).
So John can have more free time - to see his family and make his job to pay his rent.
Cause when i see this tread and others - there is allways the question when is Version 12 ready. I think he should answer "it's done when it's done" - cause the actual Platform is up and runing Smile

Open Source

All our tools are 100% open source under the GPL including our launcher (the AppNamePortable.exe that makes things portable), installer (that packages things into a .paf.exe), compactor (that lets us get LibreOffice down to as small as 250MB), platform menu, platform updater/app store, and more. You can find the source and licnese info on any app's page by scrolling down to the Download Details section, including the platform from that section of the Download page. It's all hosted on SourceForge for anyone to grab and work with. We're one of the world's largest open source projects and have won quite a few awards in the open source community.

In addition, our website runs on 100% open source software and we've even contributed back code to some bits of it. We've always been open source and 100% legal ever since I got things rolling with "Portable Firefox 0.9" back in March of 2004. And we keep all our plans public include code, planned features, bug trackers of any issues with our apps or platform, etc.

Unlike the other project you mentioned, we don't hide the way our apps work in encrypted files (it's all open source) so you know exactly how they're made portable and we don't artificially tie our apps to our platform. That way, even if PortableApps.com disappeared tomorrow, you could still use and improve our platform and tools, and use our apps by themselves or with a menu of your choosing.

The reason people are anxiously awaiting 12.0 is because it brings some features internally that we currently support with add-ons like file associations (most users currently use either the eXpresso or Portable File Assocatiator platform add-ons) so you won't need to have two EXEs running with two separate system tray icons anymore... it'll be more integrated and automated instead of separate and clumsy.

We have a large team of folks working on apps, the launcher and the installer. The platform has work included from a few different developers. At the moment, I'm marshaling the work on 12.0 myself but I'm hoping to get some more code contributions from others as well.

12.0 Beta 1 was originally supposed to debut on October 31st just 2 weeks after we released 11.2, but, well, you saw what happened with that after the hurricane and the aftermath. Sad Originally 12.0 stable would have been out by now as we'd planned on releasing it mid-November. So, since we're exactly 1 month behind from the hurricane, we're releasing it in mid-December instead. Kind of like an early holiday present.

The first beta will be out in the next several hours and we'll be rolling out another beta every few days until stable, with a couple new features like file associations, new themes, OS integration, and more in each beta to ensure adequate testing, translations and stability.

So, stay tuned and you can help out with testing out the new features as well as suggesting new enhancements or improving translations. And, welcome to PortableApps.com. I hope you enjoy being a part of our community! Smile

Built Up Some Extra

I built up some extra sleep last night and sleeping in today to make up for barely sleeping on Wednesday and Thursday nights thanks to a combination of late nights of work and a rambunctious assistant (see desktop accessory on my homepage) who decided to wake me up at dawn whether I liked it or not by knocking over one of the speakers in the living room. The one side effect is run-on sentences (see previous sentence).

It's no major new features or other stuff going on code-wise now. Just touch ups and the like, especially fine-tuning the new theme switching bits. Beta 1 only introduces a couple new features to keep things simple. But Beta 2 will be dropping right after (probably Tuesday-ish, but don't quote me), so it's just a matter of making sure what's in there is looking good for now. I was hoping to land app caching in beta 1, but I was still having an issue with it losing multi-icon apps entirely (see LibreOffice) Sad so I think that will be a Beta 2 or 3 land. Either way, I think people will be happy that the beta process is starting, even though their favorite feature might not be in Beta 1. Having another beta every few days will help with that! Smile

They do like the attention.

They do like the attention. Still, it's nice to have a pet (oops, assistant) for the companionship.

App caching would be big. Would probably help to speed up the menu load times.

Be careful about announcing dates / expected times to complete updates. I remember not long ago you totally got away from announcing dates because so many people expected too much from you. If you were one day late they would pounce on you.

True and True

They do like the attention, when they want it. Ask the IRC regulars, as they get an occasional "khgas dftk;lj;lhas dfvo;aiweijf" sent from me. That's Oscar saying hi.

App caching improved things dramatically. I'll be explaining it fully when it's posted. It uses one technique for PAF and another for non-PAF to speed up both.

I'll only be announcing one firm date, and that's 12.0 stable, which we've already set. The in between betas will be released as each new feature or bug fix is ready without needing to worry about waiting for a specific day or a specific fix. Having patches be small and fast now allows us a lot more freedom. Smile

At the risk of hijacking a thread...

With PA12 when you hover over an app shortcut in the PA menu the hover tip is displayed and this shows the App, Developer, Brief Description and app path. Is there a way that this can be switched off or hidden? I know what my apps are, where they are etc, so just wondered if there was an option to hide these details?

Not sure where else to have posted this. It may not be a feature request, certainly isn't a bug.

Thanks in advance.

12 Beta 2

Any progress on 12 Beta 2 because Beta 1 changed nothing for me. I want the file association so much. Is it possible to release it before doomsday?

No 12 this year

I don't think that there will be one new beta in this year, cause John has no time, or some problems in the new version. Maybe he can post a comment?

It has been 1 year and 7 months

I just want to use the new, stable version. I waited for it since 2 years ago, but there has been nothing. NOTHING. It is outrageous. Someone release it already!

Upgrade to the 12.0 beta

A large number of people (including myself) are using the 12.0 beta on a daily basis without issue.

While it may still be listed as a beta, it is as stable as (if not more stable than) the 11.2 release, and also has a lot more features.

Calm down

I am just as anxious as you are for the new Platform release but CALM DOWN. The PortableApps team is creating free and open source software for everyone to enjoy. Why do they do this? Read this paragraph I pulled from the Donation page

PortableApps.com is a software platform that is built differently from most software. It's built to be open, letting you use our portable apps with any other software you like and letting you use any portable software you like with our platform. Our platform and tools are 100% open source software, meaning that the code is available for you and everyone else to examine, enhance and use in other software projects...Our goal is to help change the world with software. Software that's not tied to a single computer. Software that can live locally, on a portable drive, on a mobile phone's memory card or in the cloud. Software that's not tied to a locked-down app store that only works with certain hardware or software. Software that can be written by anyone and used by everyone. All delivered transparently, using open technologies, in a secure and stable environment.

PortableApps.com was created to help people with portable software and is made of volunteers. PortableApps.com cannot survive without help from the community via donations. So please, next time you get impatient, remember this.
