How to sync

Have WinXP with TB1.5.0.8 on desktop & TBP 1.5.0.5. Am ignorant as to synching even after checking posts and following links. Have one question:

Have been using the desktop for a week and prior was using TBP for a month. Since return have kept many msgs (in "kept mail" folder), hence several "folders" are different than those in TBP. Now need to bring in the msgs from TBP and wonder if there is a program that will simply add those that are missing from the desktop without simply replacing the entire file or duplicating msgs.

Alternatively could forward each individual msg which will be received by the desktop. The difficulty with this method is that the originating address is replaced and, of course, it's tedious.

Unique folder

Whichever version of TB you want to sync from, copy all the messages you want to bring over into a new mail folder in your LocalFolders called SyncMe. Then close down TB and copy this mail folder from one TB to the other. Your local mail folder is something like:
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Thunderbird\profiles\??.default

And your TBP profile is in:
ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile

In each, you'll see a Mail directory. In there you'll see a Local Folders directory. In there, there will be a file called SyncMe with no extenion (ignore the .nsf one). That's what you copy to the same location in the other TB profile.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

There isn't a folder called

There isn't a folder called SyncMe in either TBP or TB -- snd none with .nsf, except in Windows/System32. Are you saying that it should be created in both programs?

It shouldn't make any difference, FYI, the TB profile is located on D drive, and of course, there is the anchor remaining on C/docs & settings, etc.

And if this file is created or somehow added, how does it add the msgs to the correct folder in TB? Presumably the method to copy an individual msg to the sync folder is simply copy/paste each msg individually? Then when they are all over to TB they are copied/pasted out to the correct mail folder with TB running?

Create it

You first have to *create* a folder called SyncMe or some other unique name inside TB and place the messages you wish to move inside it. Once you do that, there is a *file* called SyncMe in the location I mentioned that has no extension. Then follow along.

Created a SyncMe folder in

Created a SyncMe folder in both TBP & TB. Attempted to right click a msg in TBP and Copy To SynchMe in TBP, but receive window to empty trash and compact, which I did, but no change. It will copy to the Inbox folder of Local Folders, just that the newly created SyncMe folder is dead. Also tried control C-V.

John, is there another method to copy or move an individual msg from the inbox folder?

Alright... one more time.

Create a SyncMe folder inside the TB copy you want to copy a message from. Then close it. Then copy the SyncMe file (no extension) that exists from TB's profile to the TB you wish to copy to. Then start that TB and it will show up. You're doing the copying in Explorer NOT in TB. There is NO way to move 1 message, only folders.

That's what I was afraid you

That's what I was afraid you were saying! My problem is that I used TB for a week and saved several msgs. Now want to sync TBP with TB in order to copy over msgs that were saved in TBP prior to that week of using TB. Of course, it's OK to sync the older files as well as the newer ones in TBP, but not to lose the new ones in TB.

And unless I misunderstand, the new ones in TB would be lost simply because they are not in the sync folder, is that right?

Move the messages

As I've already stated, you simply move the messages you want copied from one TB to another into a new folder (SyncMe is just an example name) and then copy them from one to the other. If you've already overwritten one TB with the other, then your messages are gone.

I've stated pretty much exactly the same thing three times now... I don't know how much clearer I can be on this.

If you 've got unique emails both ways

make two folders in each copy of thunderbird to be synced (ie. sync_1 and sync_2), and in the first copy of thunderbird (desktop), copy it's unique emails into its sync_1 folder, and in the second copy of thunderbird (portable), copy it's unique emails into its sync_2 folder. When you've done that, make sure both copies of thundebird have been closed, and then copy the sync_1 and sync_2 files across ... the desktop thunderbirs's (or the one with unique emails in sync_1) sync_1 file overwrites the portables (if any), and the same for the portable's sync_2 file - it overwrites the desktop thunderbirds sync_2 file (if any).

Hope this helps more than confuses, if not, I'm sure somebody will be glad to help you...

Thanks everyone for the

Thanks everyone for the assist. However, I still have one of the original questions: Is there a method to synchronize two mail folders without duplicating or losing msgs? In other words if sync-1 has 130 msgs, 20 of which are not in sync-2, and sync-2 has 150 msgs, 30 of which are not in sync-1, can these two be actually synchronized so that one of them will be correct with 180 msgs -- is my math incorrect?? If so, hopefully you will still get the drift.
