Google Earth Portable 6.x Dev Test 3

App: Google Earth
Category: Internet
Description: from website Google Earth lets you fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings, from galaxies in outer space to the canyons of the ocean. You can explore rich geographical content, save your toured places, and share with others.

Online Installer: This is an online installer which will download the additional files during setup.

Download Google Earth Portable Dev Test 3
1 + 15 MB Download / 94 - 43 = 51 MB Installed (extra files are deleted at install)
MD5: be8d73d42b8478ea74ae7973a7c21902

IMPORTANT: If your upgrading from 5.x, please delete the previous installation completely (in order to avoid problems) before installing this update as some directories have been reorganized.

Release Notes
6.x DT 3 - October 20, 2011: Took care of a couple registry entries, and hopefully handled the AppData\LocalLow\Google\GoogleEarth folder in Vista\7.
6.x DT 2 - October 19, 2011: Installer now deletes some more unneeded files (the plugins folder). KML files have been redirected to Data\KML. Google Earth doesn't ask if you want to associate KML files on first run anymore. Language switching support is still being worked on.
6.x DT 1 - October 18, 2011: Initial Release

Other Notes
Cache support has been added. You can enable caching by copying GoogleEarthPortable.ini to your root folder (the folder where GoogleEarthPortable.exe is in) and setting EnableCache=true.

Other cache generated by the Windows download component is stored locally in %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5, but don't contain any data that matters, nor can anything be done about it.

Support for language switching via the PortableApps.com Platform will come soon.

Testers Needed: For Win2K and Vista/7 users. Feedback from XP users wouldn't hurt either Wink

Thank you again

I had run a regshot on one of my friend's Windows 7 PC a while back (when Google Earth 6 came out), but I didn't find any of that, which I had thought strange. While I don't like that it left stuff behind, I appreciate knowing that it's there. Thanks for your testing. Smile

@Pyro:Very nice job with 6.x

@Pyro:

Very nice job with 6.x launcher. In the previous version, removing the tick from the "Tips" screen had no effect, the Tips reappeared at the next launch. With this version, once the Tips Screen has been set not to display, it doesn't, which is great. I've just noticed that the 'beta' splash screen is no longer displayed either - I think this is much better.

Nice tidy job with tidying up the registry entries as well.

This is an app that I really want to see on PAs main list of apps.

Cheers,
Graham

cache

Thanks for your work,

but enabling cach is not working. Can You give detailed instruction?
How do I include CacheEnable=true in the .ini file?
I simply added the line and copied GoogleEarthPortable.ini into the root folder but no cache is stored anywhere.

Thanks in advance

Ulf

Copy and edit

You need to copy ...\GoogleEarthPortable\Other\Source\GoogleEarthPortable.ini into the main GoogleEarthPortable folder. Then edit the second line to be

EnableCache=true

and then try it.

More info?

Do you see the Google Earth splash screen in the beginning or did nothing happen? Were you on an account with limited rights? Have previous versions worked or is this the first time running Google Earth on your computer?

Works great but there are issues.

in Temporary Internet Files (of course in random subfolders) after closing program there are bunch of *.kmz and *.png files, please look into that, looks like some cache is spilling out

Yeah

It's towards the bottom of the topic:

Other cache generated by the Windows download component is stored locally in %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5, but don't contain any data that matters, nor can anything be done about it.

It's nothing to worry about either as John's OK'd this already..

Thanks for reporting back.

Install Aborted

Hi,

I tried to install onto my USB (a sandisk 8GB cruzer 2.0) using my PC at work (which has restrictions that stop me from installing most software to my C:\ drive, hence the need for portable apps) and it failed.

In the 'details' box was the output below. It looks like the installer is trying to access the C:\ drive. If I run the installer at home and it installs successfully, will the software run at work?

Yeah

It looks like you didn't have enough space on your Cruzer to extract the Google Earth Installer (googleearthwin-peruser.exe) onto your flash drive (you'll need about 100 MB of free space to do that). Either that or there are some *very* heavy restrictions on your work computer that doesn't allow the installer to work.

Try deleting some unwanted/unneeded apps from your drive and run the installer again.

Thoughts on updates

Google released a 6.2 update about a month ago, and I was wondering if ya'll think I should mention the updates in this thread. Simply re-downloading and installing Google Earth Portable will give you the latest version, (and should remain portable through each minor update) but there's no way to find out through Google Earth [Portable] itself.

Should I mention updates to Google Earth in this thread so ya'll can update to the latest version, or should I only mention major releases (6.x to 7.x to 8.x, etc.)?

Does not start

Unfortunately, Google Earth portable will not start on my German Win 7 64bit:

---------------------------
Google Earth Portable (PortableApps.com Launcher)
---------------------------
Google Earth Portable kann nicht gestartet werden. Bitte installieren Sie die Anwendung ggf. neu. (FEHLER: App\ge\main\Google\Google Earth\client\googleearth.exe wurde nicht gefunden.)
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

"Google Earth Portable cannot start. Please reinstall the application from scratch. (ERROR: cannot find App\ge\main\Google\Google Earth\client\googleearth.exe)

There is no "ge" folder in my portableapps\GoogleEarthPortable folder.

What's that?

Thanks alot,
NiMhurchu

Reinstall

It looks like something weird happened during installation. Try deleting your current GoogleEarthPortable folder and then reinstalling, and run the app again.

ProgramExecutable String Modification in XP

The 1st line of ...\App\AppInfo\Launcher\GoogleEarthPortable.ini must be changed to:

ProgramExecutable=bin\program files\Google\Google Earth\client

to reflect the client-root directory loc. Not sure if this is a versioning thing or a failure to redirect defaults on PortableApps installer-side.

Nothing's there

The directory tree you're referring to is renamed during installation (Open up Other\Source\PortableApps.comInstallerCustom.nsh in Notepad to see what I'm talking about).

It looks like the folders aren't being renamed properly on some XP machines. What version of XP are you running? The folders do rename properly on XP SP3 Professional and Home editions, in my tests, as well as Vista/7/8.

Only works on the machine it was 1st installed

I installed Google Earth Portable in my office's computer and when I tried to run it at home it says "another instance of Google Earth is closing. Please wait before running it again" (more or less like it, I tried to translate from original message's language).

If I install it from my home computer, when I try to run at office's machine it says the same message.

It only runs in the machine it was 1st installed. Sad

Both machines run Windows XP SP3

Incomplete exit

It looks like google earth didn't completely close before you ejected your drive . Try bringing up the task manager and check see if googleearth.exe is closing, then if GoogleEarthPortable.exe is closing as well. Delete your Data\settings\GoogleEarthPortableRuntime.ini file though to get rid of that error message first.

A workaround

Do you mean Data\PortableApps.comLauncherRuntimeData-GoogleEarthPortable.ini ??

I deleted it and Google Earth works, thanks. But after I exit, even after 30 minutes, this file remains in "stopping" status.

[PortableApps.comLauncher]
Status=stopping
PluginsDir=C:\DOCUME~1\USER\CONFIG~1\Temp\nsg3D.tmp

I think it should be "Status=stopped" or even delete this file.
What do you think?

For now my workaround is deleting this file every time I want to run Google Earth.

Thanks for helping.

PS: When I used IObit Unlocker, it says no one is locking PortableApps.comLauncherRuntimeData-GoogleEarthPortable.ini and I could eject my USB key easily.

Nevermind

Pyromaniac,
forget about it. For some strange reason, after a defrag and a scandisk on my memory key it is now deleting the file much more faster (about 1 minute after I finish the program).

It was a problem on my working right.

Sorry to bother you with it.

Thanks a lot

Thanks Pyro, this worked perfect for me. I dont seem to have any other issues with "stopping" as the other guy. One thing that is also greatly improved since deleting that file and causing it to create a new one is.... lightning startup time. Its awesome now. Before it took about 30 seconds (even from a fresh boot) to fully load ready for input, but now whether from fresh boot or not, its always only 2 seconds. I cant believe it.

Thanks mate.... Mike

Just created an account to post this:

Hello, everyone ☺
Nice Weather outside ☻

I just wanted to say, that i prefer OFFLINE installers, which need more space, but don't require Internet connection to execute - so they're faster (once downloaded) - and also more comfortable.

They don't need internet connection - and Online installers (aka WebInstaller) suck.

Have a nice day‼

Illegal

Anyone distributing Google Earth repackaged is doing so illegally. Same with Chrome. They are online installers so we can legally provide them for you.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Online-Installer

Here's why web installers suck: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:S536870912/WebInstaller
I wish, this one was an offline installer.

But thanks anyway.
