So I'm looking to start a new project and I know that you guys are able to point me in the right direction.
I'm looking to take a older desktop, put a OS on it, load a minimal amount of software on it, and stick it in a corner. I would like it to be a file sever for my house. We have 4 computers that need to connect to it at all times. I know that someone out their has done this before but I can't find any how-to(s) or threads to get me started. All it needs to do is hold files and act like a "cloud drive" All I need is a starting point.

1) Here are some suggestions for operating systems.
2) Here is a quick and easy guide on how to set up a server (using Ubuntu Server Edition (as mentioned in the first link)).
3) Here is a sample method of setting up remote access to the server. This will vary on what router you have, etc.
I hope that these help you, and I'm sure there's something I've missed that someone else can add later.
To me this looks as easy as clicking share on a Hard drive. Un-less I'm missing something. Thanks darksabe76.
I found a extra copy of Windows XP last night... Can I use this OS? Or do I need something that is more oriented towards severs such as Linux?

In my opinion, it's better to use an OS tailored to being a server rather than use the sharing options built into a desktop OS. That being said, there are ways of setting up shares on Desktop OSes without too much of a problem, so the choice is eventually yours.
