Hi!
I'm using Win XP SP3. I downloaded Chrome Portable 24.0.1312.57 and did a fresh install in D:\Program Files\GoogleChromePortable. No page can be loaded, all I see is white. I even click Settings and it does not appear too. Previously, I was using Chrome Portable 20 with no problem.

Chrome treats Program Files as a special directory and can only run as a local app when installed there. It's recommended you use D:\PortableApps or similar.

John, I found the answer. I'm using Avast Free antivirus v6.0.1367 and I have enabled only two of its real-time shields, File System Shield and Behavior Shield. Once I disabled Behavior shield, Chrome was working again (even in D:\Program Files)! To confirm this, I renabled Behavior Shield and it stopped working again! Very odd!
Update your Avast. I use Avast as well, but I am on the latest version (7.0.1474) and there are absolutely no issues with Chrome Portable on my Win XP or Win 7 systems.
As John says though, don't use Chrome Portable from Program Files - Chrome itself runs in local mode when run from here (and there is nothing we can do to stop it), and will leave non-portable data all over the place.
I notice that the OP cited D:\Program Files as the installed directory. If his boot drive is C: is it still a problem to use D:\Program Files?
if the user has configured the D drive as their program files in windows, then yes. if not, it depends on how the app detects if it is in Program Files. if it detects based on the windows settings, no, if it detects based on the string then yes.
