Start launcher stopped working

Hi : I can no longer launch the portable apps platform. The launcher , by which I mean the "start portable apps.com" icon, a 145kb .exe file, for the portable apps platform no longer works. It gives me the usual gui shape but all the applications icons are replaced with plain text "lblportable app 0x".
I get an error message that says "Cannot open file "D:\Portable apps platform\PortableApps\PortableApps.com\App\Graphics\MenuButtons\button_close_normal.png". The system cannot find the file specified".

I've used my portable apps platform many times before, and it just stopped working today. I can open the Portable Apps folder and start the individual applications singly.

So my main question is what can I do to get the start launcher going again?

A second question is whether I can just reinstall the launcher and transfer over the Portable Apps folder. I would hate to have to reinstall everything.

I have an Dell 6520 laptop with an Intel core i7 processor, Windows 7 ultimate OS, and 8gb of ram. I'm running my portable apps platform from an 8gb usb flash drive with 1.3 gb free. I read the discussion on page two of the forum and it said that reinstalling won't work. I also just added a temp folder to my USB drive.
Thanks.

Reinstall over top

All you should need to do is reinstall over top of the current version. If you have the platform installed to X:\, with X:\Documents, X:\PortableApps, X:\Start.exe and X:\autorun.inf, choose X:\ as the installation directory.

Thanks for your reply

Hi Gord;
I will try reinstalling. I have platform version 11.2 installed.
From your reply, I gather I should install to X:\ root, or should I install to X:\PortableApps ? Please advise and then I will try reinstalling let you know what happens.

Thanks

Jojo

root

Install directly to X:\, the root directory.

I got it working

Hi Gord:
I finally got it working. I had two portable apps folders in my usb and I moved all the installed programs from the old one to the new one. At first it didn't work, but I found out the correct folder after I installed a single program to the new platform and then dragged the entire set of programs to the same place. I guess I just futzed around for long enough and somehow it worked. Your tip about installing in root was the key.

So now it is working again. Hooray!!
Thanks again.

Failure of reinstall before I got it working

Hi:
When I reinstalled to D:\Portable Apps platform, the folder I had the portable apps installed in. I got some error messages during the reinstall about missing icons. I then reinstalled to D:\ and got a second version of portable apps that did launch correctly. I then moved the portable apps folder into the newly installed portable apps and found that the folder gave me a size of 56Gb on an 8gb drive. The apps also didn't show up in the menu.

I ran a Symantec security scan and got no errors/malware in either folder.

As the message above this shows, alls well that ends well.
Thanks for your help
Jojo

Disk error

Try checking your drive for errors. For me, a 56GiB folder in a 8GB drive is like a big giant warning of failure.
