More information?

You might want to give them just a little bit more information?

like: What is the version of Gimp Portable you are using? What is your version of Windows (and service pack)? Where is Gimp Portable installed (flash drive or the hard drive)

More Info

What is the full install path? Is it a new or upgraded install? What antivirus and firewall utilities are running?

Related: The only time I've seen this happen has been a badly implemented antivirus/firewall app preventing GIMP from communicating with all its file plugins. In that case, it affects either the local or portable GIMP and the only fix is to either fix whatever setting in the app that is interfering with GIMP or use a different antivirus/firewall.

Same issue

After upgrading PortableGIMP via the built-in update mechanism, I also was unable to open any file format other than XCF. (I'm on Win 7 64-bit, the path do the appli is D:\Users\jwxxxx\Dropbox\jpw\PortableApps\GIMPPortable. Yes, I'm using Dropbox as a virtual pendrive.)

I redownloaded the portableGIMP installer, installed in in D:\, and everything worked. I then deleted the old directory under PortableApps and moved the newly installed directory into the place of the old one. Everything still works with the full path listed above.

This suggests to me that the problem lies with the upgrade process.

DropBox Issues

DropBox has some known bugs when lots of small files are being updated. Our own designer ditched DropBox as a result and switched to Box.net. Please try disabling DropBox, upgrading, and then re-enabling to be sure.

Can't duplicate

I can't duplicate this issue. It works perfectly here, also on a win 7 x64 system. What is the path you have Gimp installed to?

Also, try deleting the X:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\Data directory, and see if that makes a difference.

I have installed gimp fresh

I have installed gimp fresh on C:\PortableApps\PortableApps\GIMPPortable and deinstalled yesterday evening ...

Antivirus is Avast7 free; Firewall is a COMODO FW.

But I will try it again.

Disable

Try installing, scanning all of GIMP Portable, and then temporarily disabling COMODO and Avast. Then try running GIMP Portable. That will at least confirm whether it is one of your utilities killing GIMP.
