I have an SD card that I want to use for cleaning up other computers. Like most SD cards, it has a read-only / write-protected switch.
When I start the portableapps.com menu when it's write-protected, most things work fine until I try to exit the menu. Then I get errors about "unable to write to \PortableApps\portableapps.com\data\portableappsmenu.ini". The errors don't stop, and it seems no matter how many times I click "OK" or hit the close button, the program never realizes that it can't write to the drive.
Is there some configuration option I need to set here?
Google shows that running from CD is no longer supported.
Well. CDs may be dead, but I doubt write-protected SD cards are going away anytime soon.

The described media of a CD is not the problem, but an obvious example.
The problem is running from read-only media, which your card will be.
Therefore it is simply an issue that cannot be avoided at present.
An SD card slot is not typical on a computer, nor would most users carry around such a card with a reader.
So while not "dead", your case is hardly typical.
Also the read-only switch actually means little, since it requires the reader to actually acknowledge it.
It is not a hardware lock, but simply a flag which a suitable reader only might take notice of.
Even that can be bypassed.
If at first you do not succeed, use more sticky tape.
