Drop it portable

i was wondering if someone wanted to make a DropIt portable

drop it is a file sorting program so that people can sort files by extensions i.e. .exe, .lnk, .zip

it is on sourceforge so i do believe that it is freeware

i do use it and it is free

if anyone want's to try it or to see if they want to make it portable they can look on sourceforge

if no one can find it i will post a link to the page

the latest version as of this post is 4.7

they do have a portable version but i think it would be a great addition here

AutoIT Malware and False Positives

DropIT is written in AutoIT. AutoIT is not a compiled language. It merely takes the closed source AutoIT EXE and sticks the script onto the end of it in encrypted form, making it very difficult for tools to analyze is goodware vs badware-ness. AutoIT is also very popular with malware writers since it is relatively easy to use and relatively powerful, with access to most of the Windows API. Since every AutoIT-based EXE is basically the same EXE, false positives run rampant across all kinds of antivirus engines.

We had allowed an AutoIT-based app into the app directory, EraserDrop Portable, quite some time ago. We have had numerous issues with false positives in that time. The author even created an updated version last year, but it was detected as a virus by several major antivirus engines, so we have not released it. The end result was that users complain to us that downloads have viruses in them even when they don't.

Due to the issues with AutoIT-based EXEs, we instituted a policy against any new AutoIT apps a few years ago. As the same issues persist, we're unlikely to change that policy.

Currently One False Positive

Surprisingly, the current 32-bit version of DropIt only has one malware/trojan alert, which is low for an AutoIT EXE.

Every New Release = New False Positives

Every new release of an AutoIT based app yields new false positives. EraserDrop settled down to none over years and still has new ones pop up. A small update and recompilation had 5 false positives including at least 2 of the major engines IIRC. It basically hamstrings you from developing, updating and releasing like we would normal compiled apps.

No

AutoIT apps are too much of a hassle and a poor user experience when used portably. Every single update will have false positive issues, folks having the app randomly deleted as they use different public PCs with different antiviruses, etc. The whole reason we can't even update the one AutoIT app we have is because it would be detected and deleted as a virus for likely 20% of people who download it. And there's really nothing we can do about it. You can run apps like that on your own PC and manually whitelist them, but you can't do anything about it when you use them portably on machines you don't own.
