I would like it if it were possible to start an app from the menu, after which the menu would *not* hide itself. For example, by holding shift.
This works in Windows XP as well (using the classic start menu). It's very convenient to quickly start a bunch of apps one after another.

So far, you can only set the menu to stay visiblke at all times.

You can set the menu to remain visible. That way it will only hide when you want it to. It's not in the GUI options window yet, but can be set manually:
