Found an excellent launcher called 8Start. It's very configurable, and supports categories, custom icons and wallpaper. It doesn't have a backup function like the portableapps launcher, but it can link to any file or folder, and uses either absolute or relative paths.
It takes a lot more configuring - you need to define at least one group and category, and the links have to be added one at a time, but they can be edited and moved around after they are created.
I've left my key apps in the PortableApps Launcher, and also a link to 8Start. I moved all the other apps into a separate folder, and linked them in 8Start.
Works pretty well!

google!
But I figured it would only be necessary if it was really obscure - and it does google to the top. I'll do it better next time. Here's the main page:

MetroGT posted a link for me. Thanks!
Andy Goh did a nice job on this app. Lots to tinker with, and quite usable.
Only 1 MB without the skins. It seems to create png files for each category that look like screenshots of the windows, and if you have a lot of categories, it may add a MB or so to the space needed.

Why should we have to google?

Unless you have something against the Google engine itself.
There are many other search engines available, such as Yahoo, Windows Live, Ask.com...
And with each one, if I enter "8Start", the correct web page is at the very top!
Try some of them, you might like them.
I'm not going to post the links to these search engines - but you can find their sites easily using Google!

Bahamut was saying "Why should we have to Google when people can post a link?"
In essence, we prefer having links, because a lot of apps have ambiguous names.
(BH, correct me if I'm using that wrong)

Interpretation not necessary. I fully understood. Will refrain from frivolity.

Looks very nice and has nice features. The long awaited version 2 of PortableApps Suite should include such features as well. Please hurry with the release of the next version of PortableApps Suite, cannot wait any longer for it!
Thanks for the comments here, I will keep on enhance it
@ Andy
Sounds promising, but when I click the mainpage to get me to the "download" page, I don't detect any links therein that appear to lead to the download.
.
(So, I had to dig up a link for it somewhere else)
.
What's up w/ that?...

You can download it by click "Download Site" in the download page
...then you might wanna make this link WAY more prominent...
Perhaps re-tool the link into a graphic "Download Now" button (or somesuch); somethin' that's more obvious. I had to do a browser text search within the page to find it; it was *that* obscure and unnoticeable!...
(IOW, integrating the link into a small chunk of text in the smallest font size that appears on the page is not exactly very user friendly, comprendes?...)
Thx!
