Looking

at the license http://torchbrowser.com/terms I am not sure it can be done legally?

specifically "You cannot license, sell, provide or distribute the Software for any prohibited use or to any prohibited end user. Software is a commercial item and is protected by U.S. copyright law and international treaty. Unauthorized distribution will be subject to criminal penalties."

Online would be possible without permission

The whole thing reads as a perfect candidate for an online installer, whether that can be done with their offline installer .exe is another matter.

I'm not really interested in picking up a browser though (especially one with a potentially fast release schedule being Chromium-based), I've got far too many concepts and half-built apps for my own website that I'd like to work on, AND I want to work towards a new version or two of dotNETInspector in the next couple of months.

I'm as in touch with other

I'm as in touch with other devs as you or anyone else here is.

If someone else wants to pick it up they will, if not, there is not much we can do about it.

I am another

Developer and this would require a portable apps installer to only be an online one, the license does not allow modification of it nor redistribution. Developers make apps that they wish to make and not on demand. As this would be and online installer it is cumbersome and difficult to maintain. As Winterblood stated if another developer expresses interest so be it but in meantime maybe you might consider giving it a shot?

i would but i not sure how to set it up

i am not entirely sure how to make a portable app in this format
(i.e. the programming of the scripts)

i normally just use a .bat file to run the program in the current directory only

if someone would make a video about making one and going through the steps i may just make it myself

but unless it is approved i will not post it here

pls someone make a video for me to follow

i'm not wierd, i'm just different

You are jumping the gun a bit.

a) If we are going to ask permission, it would be for permission to bundle - not for an online installer which we don't need permission to do.

b) Asking permission for apps should be left to the portable developer because they are usually better equipped to handle any questions the original devs want answered.

c) No-one has said they are going to pick it up, and the TorchBrowser devs may not take kindly to going through the process of talking with you just to have nothing come out of it, which may damage future chances of getting permission when someone is ready to do it (I have seen similar - "I've been asked before and they did nothing with the permission, why should I believe you'll do something with it this time?").

i was asking if they would allow it

not that i was a dev

plus they havent replied yet and i never asked a agent on their side to ask or answer questions

I just wanted to know if they would allow it

btw with online installer u would install the app anyway then just

but they not know anyway so if they give permission to do it technically i would say that after i sent the request i had realized that we would have to use the offline installer and if we cant use offline installer then i say then WE cant do it and the deal is off

i'm not wierd, i'm just different

deal would be off for now

if they dont allow use of the offline installer

u know what i will just stay out of commenting then because everyone is always so critical of me anyway

maybe i should tell them never mind cause they dont care anymore

btw i had never told them i was dev anyway so they would have either asked for a dev or i would have led them here so they could see and comment for themselves

plus i wanted this browser so here so badly and i doubt that anyone would have tried to talk to them anyway

also they may not even reply to me anyway so y do u care so much

i just wanted them to know that people wanted it to be made portable and that portable apps platform could do it if they wanted US to!!!!!!!

i'm not wierd, i'm just different

I'm not saying there is

I'm not saying there is anything wrong in you wanting it made portable.

It is also perfectly acceptable for anybody to ask the original developers for a PortableApps version of their app, whether they make it or someone here does it for them (it shows the app's developers that there is interest, and in some cases makes them aware of PortableApps existence).

What I am trying to say is that (from experience) it is better, when permission to release a freeware app is being talked about, for an actual developer from here to approach the app's original developers first.

Some developers can be quite unwilling, demanding or just completely negative on the subject of granting permission for their apps to be redistributed. Talking directly to the person who is going to be taking ownership of the portable development from the start can sometimes help alleviate these problems.

There is an off-line installer

http://download.torchbrowser.com/TorchSetupFull.exe

Double-clicking installs (under Win7 without admin rights) to C:\CurrentUser\AppData\Local\Torch (no prompt to change directory - not sure if anything is written to the registry.

If you extract that file using universal extractor and then run it from a flash drive and double-click \\$[35]\$[44]\pack.exe, you can run setup.exe and it will open the browser and it can search the web - I don't know if that is a fully portable install, though.

There are supposed to be portable versions here:
[link to illegal software site removed]

But I can't access them and haven't tested them - could be viruses, for all I know.

I'd like to see a portable version of the browser, though ...

Not currently portable.

The "official" versions are not natively portable, though ...

For example, you can copy C:\CurrentUser\AppData\Local\Torch to a USB flash drive at F:\Torch, and uninstall the C:\ drive installation and it will work fine from the flash drive, but any customizations to it will be saved to C:\CurrentUser\AppData\Torch\, which it will re-create.

Sorry about the unacceptable links ...

what about a .bat file

could that not re-route the customization save directory??

just wondering

also i do believe that JauntePE could make it portable after all it even makes it's own portable launcher

i'm not wierd, i'm just different

whats the advantage?

whats the advantage of torch over firefox?

is it as secure as firefox?

is it as fast as firefox?

does it download as fast as the "Down Them All" extension?

does it has near the plug-ins, especially essential ones like Speeddial, TileTabs Plus, IE Tab, No Script, & FEBE?

just wondering why you'd choose it over Firefox.. is it the Torrents? or the Drag & Drop Sharing?

built in torrent downloader

the advantages include a built-in Torrent downloader and media downloader (Video and audio) than add-ons on top of that both the torrent downloader and media downloaders come as default parts of the browser and it is kinda a mix of both firefox and chrome but it looks more like chrome vs firefox

plus more features to come

i'm not wierd, i'm just different

i'm not wierd, i'm just different

Permission?

This package appears to bundle Torch browser. Do you have the required permission from the publisher to do so?
