Having a bit of trouble saving edited graphic files (with NO square background) to .ico without adding the square background. The only app I've tried that will save in .ico is IrfanView. It works, but even if have a round image w/ no visible background, it won't KEEP the background transparent, when save it to .ico.
Will IcoFX or Greenfish save "free form" graphics as icons, w/o adding the square background? Either by opening the already edited .jpg / .png files, etc., then converting; or editing / drawing in these programs themselves?

The questions you are asking re GreenFish and PicPick are best asked to the publishers. We only portablize them.
For icon work, I personally use either GIMP Portable or Photoshop to do a transparent PNG and then open it in IcoFX Portable and save it as an ICO. Your source image MUST already have a transparent background or you need to promote it to a layer and then delete any part of the image you want transparent.

Gee, I was just looking for a little input on simple matters from people that used them. Sounds like you have.
Sounds like IcoFx will save images w/o adding the square background - if they don't already have one.
If creating / copying a round or irregularly shaped image, it would be hard to select / delete unwanted background. I can create images w/ transparent background in Paint.Net, but it doesn't save in .ico. That was why I asked about these 2 apps. Or could use GIMP to create transparent backgrounds, then IcoFX or GF.
If you're comfortable with Paint.NET, work in there and then save it as a PNG then open it up in IcoFX Portable or GreenFish Portable. Most icon apps are really basic image editors. That's why I prefer to do the actual image editing in a full-featured image editor. I recommend the same to other folks, so if you like Paint.NET, use that and then convert it to an ICO using an icon editor.
The process of using Photoshop or GIMP and then assembling the different sizes in IcoFX is how I do all the icons for all the apps you use here
