No longer necessary to overwrite installation directory for upgrading? Help > About Firefox > Check for updates... also works !?

Hello,

I've got a little confused since it seems no longer necessary to overwrite the installation directory for upgrading Firefox Portable.
As a matter of fact, the "normal way" to update it (Help > About Firefox > Check for updates) effectively leads to an updated version after a relaunch of FF. Now my question : is it really equivalent, or are there any files that are replaced in the user profile or at another place (or maybe some that won't be updated at all) ?

Thanks in advance for your help. Best regards. Cervo

Portable Bits

Firefox has had the ability to update itself within Firefox Portable for quite a while. But it will only update Firefox itself, not the portable bits. For example, in 20.0.1, the portable version added in having submit crash reports off by default and added better handling of it so files aren't left behind. If you allowed Firefox Portable to update itself from 20.0 to 20.0.1 to 21.0, you'd have an updated Firefox, but you wouldn't have the updated functionality in FirefoxPortable.exe.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

John, thanks a lot for your detailed and instructive answer. It is exactly what I have suspected and you gave me a definitive confirmation.
