i just downloaded µTorrent and installed it to a folder in my thumbdrive. i set it to 768k internet speeds and the desktop as the default download location. i ran it on a machine i know does not have µTorrent already installed and it works.
did i just make a portable app? or do i need to configure some more stuff?

No, you didn't "make" a portable app, rather, you uncovered one.
(Kinda like Columbus "discovering" America, when in fact my Mohawk ancestors coulda told him it was HERE already, and *they* were here first...)
Anyway, as you 'discovered', uTorrent is portable as is. I first came across it on portablefreeware.com some time ago.

no, i meant "did i make it portable?" as in "it won't install anything to the local disk right?"
i discovered that the dells my local library all have CD burners in them, so all i need to do now is find a burning program that will run off a thumbdrive
I have to try PAs at my library. They just got a heap more computers, 'cept there are "Teen computers" (e.g. any use, 1 hour limit, requires account) or "Catalogue computers" (e.g. local network only, no time limit, already logged on).
Mind you, I can get the catalogue computers onto the internet (read: hack) and browse PA.com
And my friend (who I taught about PA and programming) can get the ones at both a chess centre (don't 'spose any of you play chess?) and a shopping centre on to the net via Help

What I shoulda said (and often do) is that it's *fairly* portable as is..
My definition of the term "portable" is looser than most folks'..
To me, the essence of portability is the ability to run an app w/o having to install it on the host PC first.
By THAT definition, uTorrent IS portable, whereas to most of y'all, it ain't portable unless it leaves no traces of itself WHATSOEVER behind, and so I've learned to say "fairly portable" instead...

It really is _fully_ portable though. You were right, it just needs a 10 second tweak.
I think uTorrent makes an entry into the Exceptions of Firewall Settings. It did on my machine.
