I can't find this settings in the GUI and in both of the smplayer.ini files it is set to false. Nevertheless SMPlayer tries to connect to the Internet for update search.
Is there a way to switch it off?

It's simple, I just tested this method. According to here, all that's needed is to add the line enabled=false to the update_checker section of smplayer.ini, found in Data\smplayer.
We can easily add a fix for this in the next package we build.
