[Closed] Installation Failure

I recently installed the PortableApps platform and numerous apps. However several apps fail to completely download and install. OpenOffice, LibreOffice, K-3DP, GIMP and Inkscape download all but the last ~5kB, then give a download error and fail to install. Help!!

Network

This can happen on network connections with intermittent connectivity errors, especially with larger apps. The apps you are attempting to download are actually coming from a couple different places (LibreOffice is hosted by the publisher, the rest are on SourceForge) so it isn't a server issue. It's an issue at your ISP or your internal network.

Installation Failure

Thank you John. My installation problems occurred when I tried to download and install apps from within the installed PortableApps platform. When I downloaded and installed from the PortableApps.com website, everything worked fine. It was not an ISP or network problem, but a PortableApps platform problem.

More Sensitive

The PA.c Platform is more sensitive to interruptions in the download than a browser is. We've seen last 5KB cutoffs before with a couple of different antivirus and firewall products. ESET firewall was reported to cause this previously by one user. RogerL had contacted them about it at some point. But it is not an issue in the PA.c Platform itself. Millions of folks update apps like LibreOffice, GIMP, etc within the platform every day.

5KB

OK. I use ESET, so that sounds like the culprit. Thanks.

ESET AV

John,

I contacted customer support in the UK and spent a long time trying to convince them it was a problem with their software. They eventually agreed to pass the problem to their programmers in Bratislava. Some time later the problem stopped occurring for me so I assumed an update by them had fixed the 'bug'.

However the problem started again recently but I couldn't face the fight again with customer support so each time the platform has apps to update I disable ESET's AV (not the firewall)

You offered to 'give them a stub downloader that just downloads a file for them to test with'. I'm guessing that didn't happen.

Please would you make a stub downloader for me so that I can easily demonstrate the problem to ESET UK support again?

Contacted

I've sent the details to my contacts at ESET and will work to resolve this issue. I've also updated it as a confirmed issue in the platform bug list: https://portableapps.com/node/28593

Thanks

Thanks for letting us know. It will be good not to have to disable ESET when apps need updating.

Heard Back

This could be specific to ESET's scanning within archive files according to ESET. So, the download may finish and the file is then scanned (which is slow) but the lock confuses the NSIS inetc downloading component and it thinks the download failed. ESET has suggested reducing the number of nesting archives scanned or disabling archive scanning and seeing if this resolves the issue: http://i.imgur.com/oYplE1p.png

Note that this is not our ultimate solution and we're working on a way to get ESET not to lock/speed up or inetc to recognize the lock and know to wait.
