I'm running Windows 7 64Bit and have 8GB RAM and plenty of hard disk space.
I tried to use PDFTK to extract a few pages of one .pdf document and insert them into another .pdf document. I looked on the developers page for help and followed their instructions. What I got was the following error message when I tried the insertion "can't save over a source file". I tried different combinations of source/destination files. The only option to "save as" was as a .pdf , so I couldn't save it to a .txt or .doc file. The application crashed no matter what I tried. The crash log was the following;

Unfortunately, PdfTK is out of development as the original dev stopped working on it. I will try to reproduce your error and see if I can herlp you nevertheless.
It sounds like you were saving the newly created pdf over a source file. What exctly were the steps you did?

I tried to cut a few pages from a long (400 page) pdf manual and insert them in another document. I opened the source document. Since the only way to save was in .pdf I created a .pdf by exporting a one line plain text document in .pdf from Libre Office writer. I opened in Adobe reader so it seemed to be ok.
I then added my destination document to the list in the "collate" tab of PDFTK. I added it (using the "add" tab,after the source, before the source and both before and after the source. I indicated the six page section I wanted to cut and insert. When I clicked save as a dialog came up asking where to save it. When I saved to the destination document the error can't overright a source file popped up and the program closed. When I saved to a blank document the program closed.
The error I got was obtained after clicking on details. When I went to the help page, located on the internet, it gave me some instructions, almost identical to those I used. Still no joy.
Thanks for your efforts to help. Any help is appreciated. If it seems intractible that is ok. Since it isn't in development anymore and doesn't seem to work I can just uninstall it and look for something else.

I just tried it with 2 documents of mine. I split a 5 page pdf into single pages and then inserted them using the collate tab:
I then tried the same with 2 other pdfs:
and it worked too.

The original PDFtk tool is still under active development.
PDFTK Builder, OTOH, is a separate tool that wraps PDFtk in a GUI interface. Builder appears not to have been maintained for many years.
I have worked on PDFtk for ten years now, and we just released version 2.02.
We have also just released our own graphical interface called PDFtk Free. It is a Windows application that splits and merges PDFs: http://pdftk.com
I hope you will try it out.

My bad. I certainly know pdftk is still under developent, as you noted its just the Builder thats abandoned. Maybe it indeed is time to look for a replacement that makes use of the updats of the underlying pdftk.
I will have a look at your GUI.

The new GUI is closed source freeware and a pro/paid version is being worked on.
I wonder if we can combine the latest backend tool with the last PDFTK builder GUI.

Illl have a look at it nevertheless, although most of the interesting functionality seems to be pro-version-only (surprise!). I checked some alternatives to PDFTKBuilder a while back but the were less feature complete or equal so I didnt bother but with the toolkit being updated it might be worth it looking for alternatives.
