I realize it is OFF, since it requires admin rights. What is a good app for PDF printing? I used CutePDF so far but got annoyed by the fact that you have to click through the install process carefully not to install any junk (what is the terminology for that?). Any better option?
I searched the forum but did not find any solution.

out of let say libre office can be pdf printed directly.
As portable utility for such thing, I have 7-PDF-Maker Portable, this is however a payware and it is rather a converter then a printer driver, but is very versatile and works OK.

Installed software for that I use PDF creator.
As many programs I use now have pdf export function included, the printer drivers for that or the converter type like 7-pdfmaker I am using very seldom now.

You can use really anything that installs as a print driver, then. It'll never be portable, of course.
If you want portable, you could just use LibreOffice Portable for documents, spreadsheets, presentations, etc. And for web pages, you can use Firefox Portable with an extension like this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/print-pages-to-pdf/

Note that for web pages, you can also use Chrome without any plugins - simply choose "Save as PDF" in the print dialog

Now all I need it a solution to convert the *PRN files OpenOffice generates to *PDF. Any good or portable solution for that?

You shouldn't generate a PRN in the first place. Open any of your documents in LibreOffice and export them to PDF. No need to ever create a PRN.

What I want to accomplish is to PDF print 'handouts' (6 slides on a single page) of PowerPoint presentations. I could not figure out how to do so without (PDF) printing the actual file.

The point of a handout is to save space on a printed page. It's designed to be printed only. Why would you want to export a PDF in that format? It's far less efficient for the end user to flip through. And it doesn't save any file space (the file will be the same size). When you export a real PDF in LibreOffice, you can include thumbnails as a navigation element on the left side, making it incredibly easy for someone on any size screen to flip through without having to zoom in and out as they would on a '6-slide per PDF page with no navigation' setup. A real PDF is much easier for a user to deal with on their phone, tablet, laptop and desktop.

I would print a Handout to PDF first because I do not have my printer, it is easier to have a make myself a proper 'print ready file' first, in this case a Handout in PDF then let it print the PDF as it is by whoever than having to tell instructions on how to print to my friends or print shop employee.
I think it is a fairly viable real like use case scenario.
In that case, just install one of the standard free print to PDF printers locally. LibreOffice does not currently provide a facility to export a handout to PDF. It can only print them. So, you'd need to use a PDF printer at the OS level (non-portable) to handle that specific scenario. There is no other workaround at present.
Personally, I skip printouts entirely for presentations and simply provide everyone with a PDF. Either directly via email for small presentations in the conference room. Or via a download with the URL provided during the presentation for larger rooms at a conference (when I presented at the Open Source Convention, for instance). No need to waste the trees.

- I actually have not to save some trees, I am sorry, I need these handouts for some courses, nice to take notes next to them, view them offline, etc.
- Okay, so after running all these circles, we can get back to my ORIGINAL question: yes, I know I need a local PDF printer at the system level, the one I use now and know of, CutePDF is an annoying clickware (or what is the term? freeware and wants to install all kinds of crap if I am not careful what checkboxes I click). See my OP.
So I would prefer a more clean, lightweight local PDF printer, that's it. Suggestions?

Surry, but DoPDF sucks. I printed some PDFs from OpenOffice Impress (PowerPoint handounts) and it left blank random slides. This is unacceptable.
On the other hand, CutePDF just works, with the exact same setting. Though it tries to install adware on my machine.

Try HP ePrint, it is a portable printing app by HP., this is the one I am using while doing my business at home, every printed materials I need to reproduce are for posters and flyers.
