Acronis Disk Director

I guess this might be a bit of a tall order, but a portable version of Acronis Disk Diector or similar partitioning utility would be really useful. I've never managed to make a bootable key to do this and end up having to install the program just to do some repartitioning/resizing that only needs doing the once.

An absolutely ideal use for a portable app, eh?

Not Likely

It's not likely that a partitioning utility will ever be a portable app because of the dependency on admin privileges.

However, a great tool for a bootable USB Key is YUMI. I have the drive set up with YUMI as well as PortableApps. 1 Partition, FAT formatted. While Windows is running, it behaves as a normal flash drive, on bootup, you can load any of OSes that you set up using the YUMI utility.

I'd recommend a minimum of a 4GB flash drive for this, depending on how many OSes you'd like set up in YUMI

Found an alternative

Thanks Zach.

Just after I posted I found a free alternative called Partition Wizard:

http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html

Haven't used it yet, but the product looks mature and offers everything I need in the free bootable ISO. Boots fine as a DVD so I'll try making a bootable USB, too.

YUMI looks real interesting, though, as I have a whole box of USB drives with various utilities and useful stuff and the idea of having one or two big fast drives with a boot menu to select from is very appealing. YUMI seems to focus on the various Linux distros, but could I have, for example one key with both Windows 7 and Windows 8 installers? Possibly a mix of bootable and content that can be launched separately or via Portable Apps?

Not sure

I'm not sure about having Windows 7 and 8 installers on the same drive, i haven't tested that. It does support having at least one of the two along side as many linux distros as you can fit on the drive. You can even attempt to load and configure non-supported ISO images to boot thru YUMI.

My current drive has a mix of bootable OSes and content launched via PortableApps, and it works great.

edit: since this is no longer an app request, maybe a moderator could move this to OffTopic
