[Fixed] Ekiga won't open

After installing Ekiga via the PA menu / updates I tried running it to no avail. All I get is the splash screen and nothing else opens. Is this the expected behavior? Am I doing something wrong? Do you think I should uninstall and then re-install again?

I have uninstalled,

I have uninstalled, downloaded and manually installed and it still won't open. I even tried installing on my computer at the root of c: and it still won't open. As far as I can tell the only thing working is the splash screen.

What Operating System?

Could you try browsing to App\Ekiga and running ekiga.exe directly and tell me what the error message says?

From C: I have to browse to it and run in manually. The splash screen appears and then nothing. Not even an error message. I get the same thing if it's started through the PA menu. Splash screen and then nothing. I've uninstalled via PA and did a manual download from SourceForge, then installed to PA and get the same thing. I can't get it to work. Went to the Ekiga site and didn't get much help there.
Does it work for you?

Run Directly

Again, could you please browse to your EkigaPortable\App\Ekiga directory and run ekiga.exe directly (not EkigaPortable.exe). This bypasses all portablization and runs the app directly.

Ekiga Portable runs just fine for me on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (my main box).

I understand now

Thanks for your patience. I did what you asked and ran the Ekiga.exe and got the System Error ["The program can't start because intl.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."] As previously mentioned I have re-installed a number of times and it didn't fix the problem. Is intl.dll a file I should already have on my computer?

Change

Ok. Could you open up the EkigaPortable.ini file in the EkigaPortable\App\Launcher directory and change the line that reads GTK_BASEPATH=%PAL:AppDir%\gtk\bin to GTK_BASEPATH=%PAL:AppDir%\gtk

After that, try to run EkigaPortable.exe again. Not sure if that will help or not, but it's a start.

What else do you have installed on this specific PC that might be out of the ordinary? Do you have a limited or admin login?

Copy and Paste

I was able to copy and paste where you asked but it still doesn't open. I did some research on intl.dll and ran sfc /scannow as admin and it didn't find anything.

Several weeks ago I did recover from a virus that was preventing the opening of control panel and explorer.exe . I wonder if any of this could be fallout from that episode. Still, I would think SFC would rplace the missing file.

I don't think I have anything unusual on my computer. Also, I am the sole user of this computer and have admin rights.

**I did some digging around the Ekiga files in the program and found the file we are talking about (intl.dll). If it has its own intl.dll, why wouldn't it work with that file present?**

Included, Virus

The file is included and should be used by the app due to the way the PATH is structured. It's set by the EkigaPortable.exe launcher due to the setting in the EkigaPortable.ini file. With that file again, could you change the existing PATH= line to the following:

PATH=%PAL:AppDir%\gtk\bin;%PATH%

The one thing I can think of is you have another GTK+ install somewhere in your path. Switching this order should fix that.

As for the virus, if it isn't this suggestion above, it could have affected something. But we'll consider that next.

That did it.

OK - That did the trick. Now it opens and I had to tell Windows Firewall to allow. Probably not unusual.

So, in your opinion, what could have caused the necessity to have to change the path?

** I did some more research about GTK+. I do have GIMP installed on my computer. Could that have caused the problem?

That's It

Yeah, that's it. And that's a big one as it could impact lots of other users.

As such, I'm going to push out an update to the app to make this a part of it for all installs.

Thanks John

Thanks for working with me on a fix. Although I'm not a programmer you made the directions easy to follow. I can tell you are quite adept in the programming arena. Keep up the good work.
