I'm looking for a way to get Chrome Portable to have all the plugins I might need ready for travel. I am a tech for a small telecom company and we have plenty of issues with users not having updated/installed plugins required for some of our main services. The plugins we need would be Java, Flash, and Quicktime. A pre-configured Chrome Portable is my idea to solve this problem without the users needing to figure anything out.
Please let me know if this sounds like a plausible solution, and what I can do to make this happen.
I have tried \Data\Plugins and adding the files that are reported in my desktop version of Chrome and have had little to no success.
Java just use jPortable and the Chrome Portable launcher will pick it up.
Flash is already pre-built into Chrome, no additional work is needed. Keep in mind that all your Flash settings will be saved locally.
Quicktime is not a plugin. It's a plugin link to the locally installed full version of Quicktime. It can't be used portably. Quicktime is pretty much redundant anyway these days what with standardized video formats and built in support for them in browsers.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Well, I found the first problem:
In an INI for Chrome Portable, there is a value for the plugins directory which points it to \App\chrome-bin\plugins. After moving my plugins directory, I got everything to load...I don't know why I couldn't find any documentation that mentioned that path.
Anyway, we have some clients that are using super legacy formats for the files they have on our servers and I am going to try and make the stuff work...and I was having trouble with jPortable not showing up as well...so hopefully I can make things happen.
I am going to try using folder names like %programfiles% in the chrome-bin directory and see if I can get QT to at least work that way. I know the definition of portable here is leave no registry crap behind, but mostly my clients and I just want the stuff to work. I'm also considering a link to Ninite containing all the plugins we need them to have updated...but that's further down the road.
Thanks for your help,
Try App\Chrome-bin\Plugins (Plugins folder will need to be created manually)
