Spotfiy Portable

--In theory, this is not against the Spotify EULA as it still uses your %APPDATA%. --

So I was looking online and I couldn't find anything for this, so I decided I'd make a Spotify Portable application.
I read up on the EULA and apparently Portable Applications are against it, however this 'application' still uses the %appdata% command, so its still technically using computer resources.

Download Link (VERSION 1): [Link removed; it's still redistribution - mod Chris]

Encase you care, the warranty of SPOTIFY does not warrant third part applications, which I'm going to assume this is so anything that may happen is not my fault. Either way, have fun with it.

Proprietary, Illegal

Although this is a great attempt to get Spotify into the hands of portable users, it is still illegal to redistribute.

Spotify has a proprietary license, the terms of which can be found here.

Section 8a of those terms very clearly prohibits redistribution of their product:

Spotify Terms & Conditions, Section 8 - User GuidelinesThis means, for example, that the following is not permitted: Angel Copying, reproducing, “ripping”, recording, or making available to the public any part of the Spotify Services or content delivered to you via the Spotify Services, or otherwise any making use of the Spotify Service which is not expressly permitted under these Terms;

Section 8c likely also applies, as a portable copy of Spotify would likely be considered either a derivative work or a modification.

If you can figure out how to

If you can figure out how to extract their installer, the full installer can be had from http://download.spotify.com/Spotify%20Installer.exe.

Which could be used to make an online installer to avoid the "redistribution".

This means, for example, that

This means, for example, that the following is not permitted:

...
(c) reverse-engineering, decompiling, disassembling, modification or creating derivative works based on the Spotify Services or any part thereof;

What you suggest is still against the stated terms.
Disassembling their installer, and creating a derivative work.

If at first you do not succeed, use more sticky tape.

permission?

I know I've asked before, but is ANYONE EVER going to attempt to ask for permission from Spotify?

Ask permission?

Hey John T. or another dev, could you possibly ask Spotify for permission to use as a portable app? I would really like to use it...

install spotify portable

You can use Spotify as a portable app without modifying it as it seems Spotify is allready portable, after installing on your C Drive just copy the Spotify folder from your C Drive to your flash drive/usb stick or any other drive open the folder and double click the file(s) Spotify.exe or SpotifyLauncher.exe and Spotify will launch.

(To find the spotify folder right click on the desktop or startmenu shortcut, then select poperties look for the file path on the shortcut tab).

After launching you will be asked for your spotify login and password.
If you haven't got a Login/username & password you will need to register one on the Spotify website.

You may also get a message from Windows firewall asking you to allow Spotify through.

To add to the Portable apps Menu/launcher copy the Spotify folder from
your C Drive into the folder named PortableApps on your flash drive/ memory stick and it will appear in the list when you launch your portable apps.

If you have 2 entries in the portable apps list delete the file named Spotifylauncher.exe from the spotify folder.

Not Portable

Running without being installed is not the same as portable. The Spotify settings and data are all on the local PC. And all the music is added with full paths.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

spotify not portable

To my mind if you can copy the Spotify folder to a usb stick and plug it
into a second PC and run it on that pc without installing it then I call that portable.I'm sure their are many reasons why this is not technically truly portable, all I know is I tried it and it worked.

Portable

Running Spotify without install isn't terribly useful. None of your music would be with you (Spotify handles both their cloud music and your own music). And when you log in, your stuff is saved to the local PC. On every PC you use.

Our definition of portable is here: https://portableapps.com/about/what_is_a_portable_app

Some other groups think it's ok to leave things behind. Some even think it's ok to leave settings behind and lose everything on every new PC. But leaving personal details behind (like your Spotify login) would really test the limits of anyone calling something 'portable'.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Is there possibly another way?

https://community.spotify.com/t5/Help-Desktop-Linux-Windows-Web/Spotify-...

I found this, in looking for a similar solution. wondering if there's a way we can implement this into something more PA-friendly.

Here is how to use Spotify as a portable app:

The download address has changed to:
https://download.scdn.co/SpotifySetup.exe
https://www.spotify.com/en/download/

The other steps remained:
Run spotify's installation EXE file, and install the software.
Press the Windows Start button, type in %appdata% and press enter.
Look for the folder named 'Spotify'... C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Spotify
Copy that Spotify folder to your desktop or wherever you want to have it saved as portable app.

The only problem I discovered: Spotify is not able to install software updates. So you need to install the newest EXE version manually. Also I recommend to prevent SpotifyHelper.exe to starte at every windows bootup.
