Any app like KeyNotes or Treepad?

Hello.

Are there any portable apps like Treepad or KeyNotes? I've Treepad Business edition but it's not portable, and KeyNotes isn't being developed anymore.

Does anyone know anything similar to those, something which has a tree-type structure or something that organises content well?

Thanks.

Scribble Papers

Hi Bes,

you should try Scribble Papers. It doesn't seem to have as much functionallity as Treepad but it is still a fine piece of semi-portable software (you have only to set the data directory from "my documents" to an other directory e.g. a scribblepapers-subdirectory).
But the software have a big malus for all non-german speaking people - it is only localizied to German Wink

P.S. The last version is from 5/2003 but there should be a new version release in the next time.

P.P.S. There is also CueCards (2000) which is similar to Scribble Papers but has (at least in the freeware version) less function than Scribble Papers. Don't know if it is localizable to english.

P.P.P.S. What is the link to "KeyNotes"?

Hi Ryushi,

Hi Ryushi,

Thanks for the information; I'm checking it out right now. It does seem like the language issue may be a headache. I'm really surprised Treepad seems to be the only software of its type out there that's constantly updated, and now Scribble Papers, unless I'm missing something. I'm going to check out CueCards also, thanks.

The links to Keynotes is : http://www.tranglos.com/free/keynote.html It's really nice, but unfortunately no longer in development.

Try TreePad light

A while ago, I have tried TreePad light because it works with my USB key. Nowaday, I use Pstart (google for it).

nearly nothing common

Hi haivu,

I see hardly can see any common features for TreePad (Light) and PStart.
The first one is an outliner-type-software and the other one a launcher-type-software with an extremly rudimental ability to take notes.

I agree

I agree with your comment. I forgot to mention: for my need, the simple notes in pstart works just fine. I don't need the big gun TreePad.

TreePad

I have been using Treepad Biz 7 as a portable app on my USB drive and it seems to work just fine. I first installed it on C: then copied the TreePad folder to the USB drive. I did have to reenter the registration information. Having said that, I find that TreeDBNotes is just as portable and seems to meet my needs better.

I agree.

Treepad Enterprise 384 GB on USB Hard drive with a database of about 8 GIG. All working OK. Sometimes new PCs ask reg info... but i have that with me. As you move from PC to PC, you lose some "non critical settings" but it is FINE!

I've never used treepad, or

I've never used treepad, or keynotes for that matter, but I do keep a lot of notes. I have found two solutions:

Use programmers notepad and use the project manager for organizing notes. PN stores settings in the registry, but, as of 2.0.5.28 it is supposed to be able to store them in an ini file. your mileage may vary.

The second solution, and my personal favorite, requires the use of a browser. Tiddlywiki is a wiki implemented in javascript/html. TW can link between different notes, categorize with tags, search through notes, create backups automatically, and lots of other stuff I'm forgetting to mention. All in one html file. Pretty sweet.

I agree

TiddlyWiki is sweet! I suppose i stick with Treepad because i have GB of data for work organized with it. When a script comes out to TiddlyConvertIt.... I'll give it a try.

SEONote

Actually, there is an application called SEONote, and it (frankly) looks to be a dead-ringer for KeyNote, but updated. These developers have been pretty active in updating the application. Although they use their own file format, they will import KeyNote files easily (plus they will export back to KeyNote files, as well). Despite the fact that the default download is an installer, just like KeyNote, you can copy the program directory to your portable media, and it will work just fine.
The website is SEONote.com, and this the direct download link to the zip file, which is how I download it.

While not as advanced or

While not as advanced or full-featured as some of the other mention programs, I've found a small program called Mempad which works perfectly for my needs. It's very portable, and the executable is only 32 KB in size. You can find it here:

Whoops. I lied. It's actually 74 KB, but if you compress it with upx, it gets to 32.

Tree pad

I am running Tree Pad Plus V7.2 on my 1Gb Sandisk Cruzer Micro
It is working quite happily with PStart
I know it does not have all of the features of the Business version
Installation was breeze
