windows 8.1 error when running apps non-elevated

hi,

I'm using portableapps platform for many years now, without any blocker errors so far, but since I upgraded to Win 8.1 64-bit (or maybe it is also related to some other change), I can't run some of the apps as non-elevated user. It is also valid for PortableApps platform itself.

see, when I try to run PortableApps platform by double-clicking on Start.exe , I'll get:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/jbejfdft2daze5c/Screenshot%202013-12-26%2023.1...
when I right-click and choose "as administrator" it runs ok.

with portableApps it is a bit different, when I run ex. 2xclient, or uTorrent normally as user, I'll get:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/tydr5br22pvy6iv/Screenshot%202013-12-26%2023.1...
and obviously - no other instance of such app is running nor starting, I'm sure.
same as with platform - when apps are run as administrator, they work ok,

strange is, not all apps behave the same, ex. CrystalDiskInfoPortable, 7-ZipPortable, etc.
these work also when started normally as non-elevated user,

what could be the problem?
user in win 8.1 that I use is in administrators group

Install Location

This sounds like a permissions issue. What's the full install path?

it's

it's c:\portableDrive\portable\paPlatform\
and apps are normally under c:\portableDrive\portable\paPlatform\PortableApps\

yes, it must be something with win8 permissions, maybe it is because it is on C: drive directly?
my UAC settings are on the "never notify" settings

Set Permissions

Right-click on the paPlatform directory (I assume that's where Start.exe is, correct?) and select Properties. Select the Security Tab. Set it up so that Everyone is set to Full Control. Then apply it to everything. That should solve it for you.

Fresh Install

Could you try a fresh install of the platform to a brand new directory... something like C:\PortableTemp. Just create that folder in Explorer and then install to there without running anything as admin.

The platform works fine on Windows 8/8.1 and fine from the C: drive. The only exception is when permissions are set to disallow it at the file system or OS level. We just need to figure out what they are.

Also, this is a standard install of Windows, correct? No WinLite or other automation/minimization tools, right?

thanks for help with

thanks for help with diagnosing the issue,
I've downloaded the fresh portableApss platfrom 11.2 to C:\tc\, but when I run it as normal user, I still get>

I'm confused, it was working perfectly ok in my previous win8 machine.

yes, it is a standard windows install (pre-installed on lenovo yoga 2 pro notebook), no automation/minimization

existing?

was tc an existing directory? I gave a specific example of portatemp so you would create the directory, run the installer and run setup.exe all as the same user, never switching users and never using runas. did you do that? did you tick the box at the end of the installer to start?

also, could you please reenable uac and try all the steps again? setting it not to prompt merely masks permissions issues and interferes with us diagnosing this.

I did exactly that, created

I did exactly that, created 'tc' directory, installed platform there and run Start.exe, everything under the same user, never using run as.
though I didn't see checkbox with start now at the end of installation, I had to start it manually.

I also tried to restore UAC to default settings and do the whole process again, no help.
I suspect something bigger with permissions is wrong here, because "some" installers (exe files) can't be executed when located on my C: drive. They are throwing various permission/access errors and I must run them as administrator to get it working properly.

Before I had my platform on Q: drive, which was simply a virtual drive, mapped via net use or subst commands, but I don't want to have it this way anymore, because I encountered different problems in this setup (broken filesystem lookup in some apps, recycle bin must be hacked to work correctly, etc.)

PA Installation

I was performing a new install on a 32G USB driver under Windows 8.1 Pro and got:

"The device you have selected to install to does not have enough free space for this app."

OK, plenty of free space. I finally ran as administrator and it installed. I am adding apps now, so I will see what happens.
