FBreader will not do the trick since it wants to insert a book into a manager or library. What I need is a simple, robust solution like Foxit for PDFs: I click on the ebook and it launches it, does not want to arrange it. (Or maybe I need to launch a separate file in FBreader as well as Calibre's ebook-viewer.exe.
Sadly, the ebook reader in Calibre crashes under a 40 MB .mobi, which otherwise works fine on my Kindle. Any other ideas?
Besides pdf, it can read ebooks too.

Well, Sumatra does not have the search option present for PDFs for EPUBs!
If you want to use the search for EPUBs in Sumatra, you can use the same UI for ebooks as normally used for PDFs. Go to "Settings - Advanced Options..." That should open "SumatraPDF-settings.txt" in your default text editor. In the "EbookUI" section change "UseFixedPageUI" from "false" to "true" and save the file.
The next ebook you open will use the same UI as PDFs do, including the search option.

Sumatra is very limited compared to what Calibre can do. Calibre is chock full of features and it very easy to use with some caveats. Just watch the conversion process, from PDF to epub I have had some serious formatting errors crop up. Otherwise it runs great. Plus it has a good search function.
It would be nice to see a portable version of Sigil on the Windows side, though.
You can download Sigil Portable here: https://portableapps.com/apps/office/sigil-portable

Duplicate.
Try CoolReader, in the Beta forum.
CoolReader also crashes under my longer book just like Calibre. Does not do the trick.
To sum it up, I am still without a solution!
Maybe the STDU Viewer would do the trick?

I've tested it only with a 3.4 MB EPub, the biggest I have, and it worked very well.
Thanks for reminding me this software has been sitting on my computer for the last couple of months I just forgot about it. The interface is not nice but the bottom line is it works! Even for my 40 GB .mobi file.
This again did not work out quite good.
Minor annoyance: it does not show the cover.
Major annoyance: I cannot highlight text in it.
Re showing the covers, this might be so.
Re text highlighting, I've just tested with an epub, and a mobi, and it worked as supposed to.
Only the color for the "Highlight", I find it barely distinguishable from the default white background, and couldn't find any direct settings option to change it.
