I'm debating switching PeerBlock Portable from the 1.1 stable branch to the 1.1+ beta branch. 1.1 was last updated in November 2010. There are now some issues with lists only being allowed to update weekly and the old 1.1 doesn't handle that as well. 1.1+ automatically switches to weekly and included improved error messaging around when a blocked update happens. It does switch to VC++ 2008 and drops Win2K support (not that we support it anymore) but just something to include. Thoughts?
I see a lot of advantages to using a newer version especially for something like PeerBlock. On the other hand, I know some users value the "tried and true" programs like Firefox ESR. Would it be worthwhile having a separate PeerBlock Beta Portable? Or is the maintenance of another new addition not worth the hassle? If that's the case, then I vote fully for switching over.
It's not worth the hassle, honestly. The only reason I even bother with ESR is for devs to handle website and extension compatibility.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Personally I don't use it anymore for my own reasons, but if things have changed so significantly for PeerBlock I think us switching up is worth it.
As you say we don't support Win2K, so it's support/lack of support within any given app shouldn't really be a consideration.
