I recently got assigned a laptop from the company I work for. While at home, I want to be able to use it for personal browsing, but my company has strict rules against this.
Specifically they dont allow:
-Use of other browser than IE
-Use of social networks, netflix, spotify, etc
-Installing any software on the laptop.
Since Im not required work from home, I think what I do in my free time shouldnt be bound to these rules. So Im wondering how I can bypass all these limitations.
can I use a usb with portable chrome on it and an extension with a fake user agent extension to bypass the first and third limitations?
Also, as long as I use my home wifi to navigate to my social networks, netflix, spotify, etc, theres no way for them to know I have visit these right? Since im not using their network, none of this activity will be logged?
I just wanted to share these ideas to make sure I am not making any wrong assumptions that could get me caught.
Thanks!
PortableApps are not stealth.
There are still places where their use is recorded within Windows, such as the Windows recently run list, plus most firewall and antivirus software also record which programs are run on the system.
While these can't be directly monitored, anyone from IT who got their hands on your laptop would have the chance to know that these programs had been run.
As far as your IT departments specific blocks:
1) Depends on how they have locked the laptop down. If it is restricted from running anything off a removable drive, you would have to copy the PortableApps to the hard drive to work. If they have prevented the running of specific executables from anywhere on the system you are out of luck.
2) They can't really monitor your internet usage remotely, but they may have blacklisted particular websites. I am not sure how Chrome would deal with that since it does rely heavily on IE components.
3) I would assume they have set up a group policy to prevent this - if so you have very little chance of working around it. As I said above, PortableApps can be copied around once they are already installed, but it depends on how they block programs from running as to whether it is any use to you.
1. Buy your own laptop. Used ones are very inexpensive.
2. Tell the company you don't want to use their laptop at home.
3. Quit and work for a company that doesn't require laptop use.
4. Grow up.
Trying to find work after a company has fired you for insubordination is almost an impossible task.

The first paragraphs were right. There is no way of having portable apps run totally stealth.
And even if he is not in the company network, they might find out what he did by checking firewall filters or temp files or the registry.

the company could have keylogger/recording software on the laptop. (if they are extremely paranoid, they could even have a physical keylogger tucked away inside somewhere?)
If they are very strict about using the laptop only for work, then I agree with Ed_P, don't use it - get your own and don't risk getting fired.
on the other hand, if javiwankenobi wants to live life on the edge .... maybe something like a Live Linux CD (or USB)? How hard is it to check a computer (laptop) to see if a Live Linux CD (OR USB) has been used on it?
a linux live cd/usb drive is the only solution that I can think of. Afaik its undetectable but it has to be allowed from the BIOS.
