Permission

Looking at your repository, NetWorx is freeware and this isn't an online installer.

Have you got permission to repackage/redistribute, if so can you include it (or a link to it) here, or if the freeware licence specifically allows it can you link to the licence, please?

EDIT: Also, freeware apps aren't allowed on Sourceforge, you will have to find another filehost for the installer.

Thanks for your hint....

I asked the author for permission and he grants it.

If I upload online installers it should be fine because the PAF launcher/installer is open source, isn't it? I would upload my projects on DropBox but it has no download counter.

Edit: Do you know a filehoster for freeware?

Yeah, its kind of strange

Yeah, its kind of strange that they still haven't implemented a download counter despite it being one of the most requested features for 3+ years.

Online installers are fine on Sourceforge, although if you have permission an offline installer is preferable.

I use my own web hosting for the freeware I have posted, but you can use any file sharing site like datafilehost, filedropper, or one of many others. Just note that I've never used either of those sites so can't comment on how good or bad they are, I just grabbed their URLs from a quick search.

found the issue: virtual drives

this paf installer does not like virtual drive letters (they've been OK in other paf installers as I recall); after substituting actual dir for the virtual drive equivalent, all went OK; thanks for the response

Doesn't remember previous setting

Nice, but it seems that it doesn't remember previous setting, if it is restarted. At least on Win XP.

EDIT: I tested NetWorxPortable_5.2.11_Dev_Test_2

EDIT 2: New version 5.2.12 Dev Test 1 (2014-01-25) didn't fix it.

Can't reproduce....

Could you be more specific because I have no problem on Win 7 x64. Is the file "networx.db" located at the Data directory?

Explanation

Thank you for your answer.

When I turn the app on it doesn't remember any previous setting and I have to set everything again (it opens the configuration wizard). It also doesn't remember any data (statistics) from the previous run.

When the program runs the file "networx.db" is located in "PortableApps\NetworxPortable\" directory and another one in "PortableApps\NetworxPortable\App\NetWorx\32-bit" directory.
In the "Data" folder are folders "Temp" and "settings" and file "PortableApps.comLauncherRuntimeData-NetWorxPortable.ini".

When the program doesn't run the file "networx.db" is only in main folder ("PortableApps\NetworxPortable\") and in the "Data" folder are only folders "Temp" and "settings".

That is weird...

...do you close the program properly?

I don't know exactly because I am not the programmer of this but I think the settings are stored in networx.db .
Here is an explanation where the file should be:
e.g. for 32-bit. program closed: Data/32-bit/networx.db
networx running: app/networx/32-bit/networx.db

Is this your situation? If not. Could you please download the latest version again and do a fresh install?

Reinstalled

OK. I deleted the whole networx folder, downloaded last version and installed it again. Unfortunately it didn't solve the problem. After I run the program and close it I don't have the networx.db file anywhere (when it runs I have the networx.db file in \PortableApps\NetWorxPortable\App\NetWorx\32-bit folder as I wrote before). It looks like my system doesn't save the file, so it doesn't remember the setting. I can pack the whole folder to archive (.zip) and upload it somewhere if you think it could help.

That would be helpful, thanks. Maybe John or Gordwell can look at it, because it seems like a PAF issue.

Uploaded

OK. I uploaded it onto my server. You can download it here.
I was able to pack it only when I turned it off. When it was running I wasn't able to pack it, because some files were used by NetWorx.

I can't find anything. It works for me. Do you have enough space on your device and the rights?
You can try to copy the networx.db when NetWorx is running Then close it and paste the file in Data\32-bit. And run it again...

Thank you

OK. So far it seems that if I copy the database file manually it preserves the settings and the usage data (I tried to run and close it for a couple of times). For some reason the portable NetWorks itself doesn't copy the database file. Anyway it's working now. Thank you very much for help.

a small issue

After a few days I can tell that method with manually copied database file is working, unless I enable option "Load on Windows startup" in "Settings". If I do so the NetWorx is reset and it doesn't remember any previous settings or data usage (statistics).

How about Teamviewer? Where can I contact you?
Where is the networx.db after running a fresh install of NetWorx once?
(Besides App/NetWorx/64-bit) You say it is in PortableApps\NetWorxPortable

I never used Teamviewer, but I guess I can set it.

networx.db - As I wrote in one of the comments above there is not networx.db file when I close NetWorx.

When it's running I have the database file in NetWorxPortable\App\NetWorx\32-bit folder (but not in App/NetWorx/64-bit folder as I have old 32-bit system).

@JTH: Is it possible that the launcher moves the networx.db file either to the 32-bit or 64-bit folder according to which operating system (32-/64-bit) is used?

custom code

That'll require custom code. I'm on my phone at the moment, so don't have access to an example, but I'll be back on later in the day on my laptop and can give you a bit of direction then.

It involves setting %FullAppDir% to the correct app directory based on the value of %Bits%.

AkelPad

Grab the current release of AkelPad. The custom code included shows how to set the FullAppDir variable. ANd the associated launcher.ini shows how to take advantage of it.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Perfect, now I don't need to look. Smile

Slightly off-topic: I might be able to add in handling for FullAppDir to PAL. Right now I'm concentrating on bug-hunting, but will add it to my list to look at.

Note:
You have to move your current networx.db from Data/32-bit or Data/64-bit to Data if you want to use it again. Sorry for the inconvenience.

PortableApps.comInstallerCustom.nsh

You can automatically handle moving that file using the above Custom nsh file. A good example of how to do so is in ScribusPortable's source directory. Just have the action be something like "In version earlier than x.x.x.x, if Data\32-bit\netowrx.db exists, move it, else if Data\64-bit\networx.db exists, move it."

Thanks for your help again. But I have no knowledge about the commands that I have to use. Can you assist me? Is there soft of an documentation about it? I think it's easier if the few people who are using my Dev Test to move it by hand as releasing a new Dev Test for it.

Win 8.1 tester needed

I got the following report from a NetWorx stuff and would like to have proved it by someone.
It appears NetWorxPortable_5.3_Dev_Test_2.paf.exe doesn't correctly
close on Windows 8.1 it seems to stay as a process even when the
application exited.

If you mean...

right clicking it in the task bar and closing it, it closed fine for me. Course I wasn't in it long. I'll play around with it a little and see if I can get it to stay running. This computer is Windows 8.1 64 bit.
