Has anyone else reverted to FreeCommander 2009 in favour of the latest version?
It is possible I made a mistake and my settings didn't get transferred but there are (to me) some glaring absences in the search facilities for example and the new version seems like a step backwards rather than forwards.
Obviously there is a need for a portable File Manager. Before I approach the author what do other people think of the latest version of FreeCommander?

What do you mean about the search function?
If you don't like that it finds within filenames when you type, you can make it like 2009 by going into Settings > Quick search and put a checkmark near the top "Searched fraction must exist at the beginning of the text".
Drove me nuts until I found that.
Also, CTRL-F brings up an awesome find function.

I will investigate, thank you

I may have misread read your post.
Since you are (I am guessing) a user before and after the version change were, for example, your favourites carried over? Mine were not.
I could go on. The new one seems not as good to me.

I have been using FreeCommander for quite a while, both 2009 version and the new XE version. I have been experiencing some issues with 2009 since I upgraded to Windows 8 (and 8.1), so I am happy to see the new XE version.
It took a little effort to get used to the new appearance and methods, but I think it was worth it. The search issue bothered me the most, and I found the solution in their forums. I tried to pass that on to you.
The new version is not final. The author is still adding features. Unfortunately, if you are not a contributor, you are stuck at version 650 and can't see those new features and fixes. I am considering contributing, but then it wouldn't be called FreeCommander, would it?

I keep on trying XE each day to see if it will do what I want but I am frustrated so quickly I switch to 2009 after a few minutes most of the time.
Maybe the XE version is right for you. I'm glad I kept a backup of the 2009.
I still don't understand why, for example, my favorites and preferences weren't picked up by the new version.
Each person uses some apps outside PA because the PA version is wrong, right?

Sorry, I don't have the patience for this banter.
