Using another browser; how can I stop IE from opening?

One serious and extremely annoying problem is when you install and/or uninstall a program, the software takes you to their website via IE. Since your 3rd party browser (Opera in my case) isn't registered with the O/S, Idiot Exploiter keeps opening up which I don't use.

Checking having Opera check to see if it is the default bowser doesn't do anything.

hmmm

Do you have IE set as your default browser?

If not, and Opera isn't set as the default either, the apps have to choose something and since IE is built into every Windows system...

problem where?

It is obvious that if the IE is registered as the default application for websites then it will be called up by the operating system. This is not a bug it is a feature. Can you imagine that every time you would go to call up a website via a link you would get first a list of *all* suitable programs for that?

So if you want for example firefox to open instead, then you have to register it with the operating system as the default application and thats it.

This is very basic function of windows which you learn in every u3a computer class.

To register portable browser, well some people do that, but think it is not very good idea. This makes the browser non portable, so why not to install the original then?
Imagine you designate the portable browser for handling websites and then you take the usb stick with the browser off. What should windows do then?

your operating system does it

you need to refer to your windows manual or help files to set default handling of files by certain program.

Portable programs are not mean to be registered as default for something on a computer since this function will then run into nothing when the usb stick with the program on it would be not present.

If you install portable files locally, you need to make the association by hand same way as for any other specific file types.
