Which is your favorite file manager and why?

Xenon seems to be [an] interesting [one man project by John?]; unfortunately it seems to be abandoned. Basic Tab keyboard shortcut does not work at least. I like it being minimalistic.

I very much would like to ditch Total Commander for good, tried all the 3 browsers I could find in the list (not the 2-panel ones; I want to ditch the 2-panel style as well) still, I guess these may need a lot (and I mean A LOT) of customization just to be as functional as total commander in its basic form. Sad, as I'd very much like to ditch it, with it's 2 panels...

So, your favs?

I am looking for preferably not 2 panels but Explorer style, with keyboard operations.

Explorer

I've used Windows explorer since around Windows XP time. That was about the time when I lost interest in 3rd party shells. I don't know anyone in real life that uses a 3rd party file manager any longer. I know of a couple folks I know only online that do.

Windows Favorites

On my own PC, I use Favorites, Libraries and Pinned folders to the Explorer icon on my taskbar.

Portably, I generally only need the folders that are predefined in the platform.

I am trying Windows Explorer as well after Total Commander

3 issues (was obvious in total Commander, not yet in Windows Explorer):

1) I arrange flies by name and they are arranged king of randomly, like:

- 5x
- 6x
- 2x

On the contrary, in 7-Zip it shows at they should appear:

- 2x
- 5x
- 6x

2) I googled but could not find: how can I make a new (text) file with a custom extension?

3) Say, I associated SFV files to a program like RapidCRC. Then, what is the simplest way in Explorer to open a SFV file with a text editor?

Explorer++ would be my preferred

Explorer++ is would have be my preferred file manager, followed by Xenon File Manager. I however find myself using Windows Explorer for these following reasons:

  • Certain Apps trigger Windows Explorer instead of my preferred manager (Open folder option in Firefox's download manager, which irritates me when I am using another manager)
  • Fast loading when loading icons of a folder (Xenon seems to lag for me when opening a specified folder, probably due to loading icons?)
  • Lack of thumbnails in Xenon (Useful for images and videos)

Why I would not prefer Windows Explorer

  1. Explorer++'s Bookmarks
  2. Explorer++'s Load certain folders at start up (A "home page(s)")
  3. Explorer++'s multiple tab feature
  4. Xenon's Portable App file associations
  5. Xenon's custom icon for file types
  6. The ability to customize appearance of manager
  7. settings carried with from computer to computer

ZTreeWin

"ZTreeWin is a native Windows program (both 32-bit and 64-bit) that has been developed to provide all the powerful functionality of the legendary DOS file-manager XTreeGold (and much more!), while avoiding all the limitations of the old DOS-based program."

I've been using ZTreeWin since 1999. It is not free but the licence cost is good value: I bought a 1.x licence in 1999 and received free updates until the 2.0 release in 2009 then paid a modest 2.x upgrade fee and am still receiving free updates.

CubicExplorer

I've been using [Windows] Explorer for so long, paying real money for one with a ton of features just seems... strange. Not that they're bad. I'm sure they're good. So when I saw CubicExplorer up here, I checked it out, and I liked what I saw, so I installed it on my home computer.

I can't stand how Windows (Vista forward) have all these meta folders on the left and no way to get rid of them. If I could remap them that would be one thing, but I can't. I can add folders to them, but I'd rather not jump through hoops and deal with files directly, and leave the meta crap for fiction.

Cubic has some obvious shortfalls. Loading times, sometimes forgetting to display its file tree and/or favorites... but it's a free app so I can't complain.

Altap Salamander

I use Altap Salamander from http://altap.cz Two pane, so maybe not what you want, but very functional, and utterly reliable even when transferring gigs of data. Not quite portable, but easily migrated including settings.

Point of fact I can't understand why anyone would prefer Windows Explorer, what with its clunky single pane view requiring cut-and-paste to do file transfers, lack of drag-and-drop confirmation (which causes no end of misplaced files in the office) and numerous strange quirks which someone at Microsoft obviously thought were clever, but in actual fact are a right pain. But then, that's just me. At least I get paid to go find the misplaced files!

Other thing is, using Explorer, it depends which Windows version you're on as to exactly how it behaves. With a portable app I know it will work the same on XP or 8.1 regardless.

Explorer!

I, too, prefer Windows Explorer. When I need two panes (i.e. most of the time) I open two instances of the program. I use the right mouse button to get a drag-and-drop confirmation (and normally I leave the copying or moving to TeraCopy http://codesector.com/teracopy – which I can choose with the confirmation).
