[Fixed] Stickies won't open on my computer

My computer was being really weird so I decided to restart and didn't shut Stickies down first. Now it won't open. When I click on the icon in the Platform, StickiesPortable.exe shows up in Task Manager and then disappears again.

I've tried installing a new copy of Stickies and that also won't run. I copied the entire original folder to another computer and tried it there; it works fine.

I then tried running the original Stickies from the computer it doesn't run on via the local network. In other words, the original Stickies is in a shared folder on a computer that can run Stickies; I then used the problem computer to browse to that shared folder and try to run Stickies. That gave me the only instance I've had of saying that Stickies didn't close properly and will now clean up and then I can run it again. So I tried running it again and the same thing happens with Task Manager; it shows up, it disappears.

Interestingly enough, straight after I transferred the original Stickies folder to the second computer (the one that runs Stickies) I got no error message when I ran Stickies, it just started up instantly. There was no message about it needing to clean up. (It was only _later_ when I tried to run it over the network that message showed up.)

So, any help to get this computer running Stickies again? I'm thankful that I can still use that copy of Stickies and get access to all my notes but it's a bit inconvenient not having it on the original computer.

Stickies portable

Hi, I downloaded your program and installed it no problem, great looking program, very practical! Then, I downloaded stickies which was the program I was interested in using. However, although I used the built-in installation feature, when I click on the program icon, the splash screen appears, but nothing else? I thought this a bit wierd, so I downloaded other apps including other sticky notes type apps. They all opened no problem? Any suggestions? I'm running Win 7 Pro.

Regards!

JMW - You should have started your own thread...

Because you asked your question in my thread, it now looks like someone has answered my question and chances are neither of us will get help. Besides, our problems may not have the same cause and it's better if you start your own thread so that it doesn't get confusing.

I don't know if you can delete your "answer" to me (this is my first time at this forum) but if you can, please do and then start your own thread.

Thanks!

Regarding Forum Etiquette & A Possible Solution:

Hello Liz & JMW,
First : Welcome to the PortableApps.com forums, both of you.
Second: AFAIK, nobody can delete comments except Admins, Mods and Management personnel as listed on the "Our Team" page, and your post gets locked when someone replies to it, so it's stuck there now.
Third : Wow! chill out a little Liz. These issues, being very similar and happening so close together time wise, could very well be related, and getting a comment on your thread really doesn't make it any less likely that people will pay attention to it. (actually it moves it back to the top of the Recent Posts page, which makes it a little more likely that people will notice it.)

Also, as far as forum etiquette goes, you made yourself sound really … rude … (not saying you meant it that way, but it seems to read that way), so it might have been better if you had said something more like ‘That sounds like it's probably a different issue to me, you should start a separate thread for it’.

Anyway, I don't personally use Stickies (Portable or Installed), so I don't know if I can be of much help, but I tested out a clean (Portable) install (Win 7 Pro x64), and had no issues getting it running.
I dug around in the Base App's Author's Knowledge Base, and found an indication that Stickies relies on the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 DLLs, so I'm going to recommend that you (both) try either installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86) or copying these files from WinMerge Portable's folder "…\WinMergePortable\App\WinMerge" to Stickies Portable's folder "…\StickiesPortable\App\stickies":

  • mfc90.dll
  • mfc90u.dll
  • mfcm90.dll
  • mfcm90u.dll
  • Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest
  • Microsoft.VC90.MFC.manifest
  • msvcm90.dll
  • msvcp90.dll
  • msvcr90.dll

I'd like it if both of you (and anyone else having issues getting Stickies Portable to start) would try one of these possible solutions and report back.

Thanks,

Stickies Portable

Dear All,

My first post. I'm reporting back in relation to the about as the app would not open for me either. Windows 7 Ultimate 64.

The solution provided above by 3D1T0R, works.

Thanks for the assistance and hope this was helpful to anyone having the same issue.

One too many and you just might turn Bertie Smile

Thanks 3D1T0R, I've just had the same problem and your suggestion to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86) worked a treat. Thanks a lot.

Not working

I have not gotten this to work. I keep receiving the following error

Unable to initialize DAO/Jet db engine.

My app is on the hardrive and not a network and I also tried the solution in the author's Knowledge base article.

Please start your own thread for your issue, this thread is done

Do you have more than one folder starting with "progra" in C: ?

What you're reporting here is a different issue than what the thread is about so should get it's own thread. If neither of these work, please create a new thread for your issue and be sure to include the following details: your operating system version, 32-bit/64-bit, install path, any antivirus/firewall running, any other pertinent details. Help us help you!

First try these slight variations of the commands listed in the knowledge base article:

regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\DAO\dao360.dll"

and

regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\DAO\dao360.dll"

And if that doesn't work, next try these variations

regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\DAO\dao360.dll"

and

regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\DAO\dao360.dll"

Please remember that if neither of these work for you, you should NOT continue to post on this thread as this thread is about a different issue, and is marked as Fixed.
Please instead start a new thread where we can attempt to address your issue separate from the issue reported on this thread.

Also note that your issue sounds like an issue with the Base App which means that we are not necessarily going to be able to help you fix it as PortableApps.com specialises in the Portablisation of Apps, not in the repair of misbehaving apps and/or PCs, so a question to the Base App's author would probably be more beneficial.
