[Solved]Skype Portable is not valid and can not be installed.

Anyone else getting the message below?

---------------------------
PortableApps.com Platform
---------------------------
The downloaded copy of Skype Portable (http://download.skype.com/msi/SkypeSetup_6.18.0.106.msi) is not valid and can not be installed. This could be due to an incomplete download or other network issue. Please try running the updater again when complete.

Working Fine

The file is available on Microsoft's servers and downloads without issue here.

As described in the error, it indicates an incomplete download or other network issue. This is nearly always a firewall or block at the corporate or university level. Or a country level block.

Ok tried the link directly

Ok tried the link directly and it downloads correctly. Tried via portableapps 12.0.3 and just before the end of the download it stops and comes up with the error mentioned, with the win 7 microsoft firewall on and off.

Can I move the download copy to a location for portableapps to use?

Antivirus

What antivirus are you using? Any chance it's ESET?

If you download both that file and the Skype Portable paf.exe installer and put them in the same directory, just run the paf.exe and it'll work.

Only using the "microsoft

Only using the "microsoft security essentials" antivirus

Attempting the provided solution gives:

---------------------------
Skype Portable | PortableApps.com Installer
---------------------------
The downloaded copy of Skype is not valid and can not be installed. Please try installing again.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Disconnecting from the net and running again gives:

---------------------------
Skype Portable | PortableApps.com Installer
---------------------------
The installer was unable to download Skype. The installation of the portable app will be incomplete without it. Please try installing again. (ERROR: SendRequest Error)
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Sorry, Rename

Rename the .msi file to SkypeSetupFull.exe to make it accept it.

Check to be sure you can download the .msi file correctly through Internet Explorer as it will also use the Windows internet components used by the Updater and help figure out if your PC is configured properly.

No luck. Tried with a renamed

No luck.

Tried with a renamed copy downloaded via IE 11 on Win 7 and also went to http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-full (35,595,360 bytes) and used that but it failed also.

Renamed MSI

You have to download the MSI: http://download.skype.com/msi/SkypeSetup_6.18.0.106.msi

This should have an MD5 of f56c9e0a0944c9c0aa17bb23530ebd32

Then rename it to SkypeSetupFull.exe and place it in the same directory as SkypePortable_6.18.0.106_online.paf.exe

I just verified that this works as expected. If the MSI you download does not have the MD5 listed above (check with winmd5Sum), then you're not getting the real file and something between you and the download server is sending you something else.

John, I did download the MSI:

John, I did download the MSI: http://download.skype.com/msi/SkypeSetup_6.18.0.106.msi and renamed as directed before.

SkypeSetup_6.18.0.106.msi has an MD5 of
d6c6ca2b5aad6ca2eb4c55bfd8a02be1 Whether I download via IE 11, Firefox, Opera, or Chrome.

Over the weekend I will try the USB key from a a friends PC and report back.

Thank you for your help.

Skype/Microsoft is doing

Skype/Microsoft is doing something very dodgy here.

What the SkypePortable Apps does is verify the Skype using MD5 hash, for "SkypePortable_7.0.0.102_online.paf.exe" it is listed as so:

DownloadURL=http://download.skype.com/msi/SkypeSetup_7.0.0.102.msi
DownloadName=Skype
DownloadFilename=SkypeSetup_7.0.0.102.msi
DownloadMD5=54a4c7be7dcbeeae9f345c1efedbb42c

So unless the DownloadMD5 matches you will end up with "Invalid" download. Trying multiple method listed in the forum and I'm having no luck so digging further and I notice that, using this download
http://download.skype.com/msi/SkypeSetup_7.0.0.102.msi

I download it 3 times, all 3 files have different hash. So I thought it might be due to the link, I tried another link found on Skype forum: http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-msi

This MSI files does not match either of the 3 I downloaded nor does it match DownloadMD5=54a4c7be7dcbeeae9f345c1efedbb42c

It seem like Skype generate unique files with each download.

Doubtful

It would add quite a bit of complexity to generate a new file for each downloader and then digitally sign it. It also couldn't be digitally signed that quickly to support an instant download. I'd wager something else is up between you and Skype.

Every single download I do yields the same MD5 for the new release whether by the installer itself or within a browser.

UPDATE: Please report your info here so we can track this down: https://portableapps.com/node/43096

Why is this signaled as "Solved"?

The latest version is 7.22.0.108 and once again I can't match its MSI's MD5.

As I asked before, can you please mention the needed MD5 right in the download page, so we won't have to dig in the portable EXE to find it?

Anyway, I tried multiple download sites, but only a few of them host Skype themselves, even fewer host the MSI version.
I tried American download sites as well as Russian ones. None of them had your MD5.

Eventually I had to resort to using Tor and finally could download the direct file from skype.com with the needed MD5.

Solved

Because the original poster's issue was solved.

Your issue is different. Due to your geographic location, you can only get the modded version of Skype for your country with unknown changes to it. Microsoft's own download servers do a geo-IP lookup and serve you the modded version.

The current one is here for the rest of the world: http://download.skype.com/msi/SkypeSetup_7.22.0.108.msi
With an MD5 of: c9fafbdfd509ff13b028362eb4836a0c

You won't get the real version of it though. You'll get the modded one.

Your issue is separate from the one in this thread. If I were you, I wouldn't use Skype in Israel.

Why not using at all instead of getting the original?

Why is it better not to use it instead of using Tor to get the original file?

BTW, it doesn't happen in every version. I'd say it happens in about one in every 4-5 versions.

The downloaded copy of Skype is not valid and can not be installed. Please try installing again.

After all these years. It still happens. Tested on both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Same error.

New Version

The issue you are referencing from today is because Microsoft released a new version and our installer hadn't yet been updated. It has now.
