Hi,
There are many privacy concern with Google Chrome as you know. Also about SRWare Iron as we disccuss on this forums: https://portableapps.com/node/34465 (and you can search google google for it)
Why we don't use Chromium builts which are open source and stable enough as you can test them too.
The stability of Chromium is not problem of PortableApps.com project. PortableApps's purpose is to make apps portable as their own format.
Here is a good built for Windows:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/crportable/files/
I don't know it is important but an updater for this built of Chromium:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/crupdater/
How can you stand SRWare, and you make them portable :/ and you dont distribute Chromium...
At least make a portable version and set it as BETA, and never distribute as Stable version. So we can update it from PortableAppsMenu.
Thank you
+1. I would like this too.
Here is their nice web site with downloads in the PortableApps format: http://crportable.sourceforge.net/
I understand these may be too frequent updates but maybe it can be implemented that only new version numbers get updated through the PortableApps platform?
What are your concerns with SRWare Iron? I Googled it but couldn't find.
Here a link from this forums:
https://portableapps.com/node/34465
Also you can search on google by typing "srware iron scamware".
Why do some people think Iron is scamware? Mainly for two reasons:
Personally, I used to use Iron and I don't have any problem with it, but now I use Chrome because the automatic updates are useful to me.
Those claiming Iron is scamware are usually over-exaggerating, similarly I think those who call foul on Google for forcing automatic updates in Chrome are also over-exaggerating. Both products have their places: for most people I would recommend Chrome, for a smaller percentage I recommend Iron.
I remember that they even publish the code on any site (sougeforge, github...). This is normal?
I try to open with many different users and many different topics about this issue (publishing the code) but the admins of their forums never allow my threads to be visible to other people. This is normal too?
I don't know what you thinking but to use Chromium would be better than anything...
The source is available from the official download page.
Just scroll to the bottom.
All three source code links resulted in "Error - File not found" when I tried them a few minutes ago
I didn't try the links when I posted that, I just saw they were there on the page.
Trying the links now I get the same file not found errors for all three. Also seems strange that they would host source on Rapidshare when they host builds on Sourceforge.
I'm going to keep my eye on how this works out. It does look extremely suspicious at this stage.
These download links are broken since many years as I remember. I had try them many times...
That would be very nice, except that those builds
http://sourceforge.net/projects/crportable/files/
just doesn't work for me.
My profile is reset to defaults every time drive letter or path is changed - either within same machine or after plugging to another
This does not happen with Chrome or Iron portable.
+1 for proper chromium portable
Would be neat to see this work it's way over here
I just downloaded and tried the lasted Chromium Portable from http://crportable.sourceforge.net/ and it worked fine for me straight out of the box, even after compression. It seems to conform exactly to the PortableApps spec and all it would need is hosting here and the official PortableApps splashscreens.
It is difficult for portableapps.com contributors to build from source code the chromium and make it portable. But we should find a stable (as possible) build of Chromium and make it portable to share it on portableapps.com app market.
Word.
Another reason for Chromium browser portable:
https://portableapps.com/node/42637
"Browsers based on the same engine like Chromium, Iron, and Opera are not affected by this issue. Self-contained browsers that do not hook into the OS like Firefox and SeaMonkey have no such issues. Illegal packages of Google Chrome made portable from other sites are all affected by this issue."
There a bunch of new Chromium based browsers without the drama of Chrome.
I have tried out: SRWare Iron, Comodo Dragon, Opera, Vivaldi, Chromium. I like opera the best for now.
None of them are not fully open source exprect Chromium which we already want it as portable.
On the main page of chromium project: https://www.chromium.org/getting-involved/download-chromium , I see this link: https://download-chromium.appspot.com , that writes "created by François Beaufort - now maintained by the Chromium team". I have been using this app since many months... I did not see any bug. I know it is not stable as Chrome stable version. But it would be great to see it as portableapps.com format.
There are offiacial chromium builds https://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-snapshots/inde...
I hope someone will build portable builds for us.
That is definitely not stable. Builds happen as often as every 20 minutes. That is the antithesis of stable.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Hm. I don't know how to correctly detect chromium builds.
According to https://omahaproxy.appspot.com/ current stable build is 344925. But i can't find directory with this build.
Closest directory is 344926 https://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-snapshots/inde...
I hope someone knows how to get such info.
John,
Any how about simply adding http://crportable.sourceforge.net/ to the official repository? I would like it. And many. thanks so much!
Mr. Haller,
I too would like to know why this isn't added. The developer(s) seem to have it already set up for you. Is there some criteria they are missing that won't allow you add it here?
