[Closed] FileZillaPortable_3.9.0.2 does not support Windows XP

FileZillaPortable_3.9.0.2.paf.exe unpacks fine.

Then, upon execution of FileZillaPortable.exe, the splash screen appears as usual, but the GUI does not start. Nor is there any related process shown in the Windows Manager after the splash screen disappears.

Version 3.9.0.1 starts without problems.

Anyone else experiencing the problem?

XP Support dropped

Filezilla officially dropped support for Windows XP back at version 3.8.1.

Although it continued to work for a few versions (at least we had no reports of issues from XP users), it is possible that every version from 3.9.0.2 onward just won't work on XP.

Windows XP Support Dropped

FileZilla no longer runs on Windows XP. I've made note of this on the app homepage and in the release announcement. 3.8.x was the last version to support XP. 3.9.0.1 was the last release able to start on XP.

Only 3.8.0 Works For Me

Sorry I'm so late to the party, but FWIW, 3.8.0 is the last version I can get to run on Windows XP Home SP3. Versions 3.8.1 onward only give the splash screen and the program fails to launch.

I'm curious as to how others are getting 3.9.0.1 to launch on Windows XP. Am I missing some critical file(s)? (Besides running Windows Vista or higher, of course. :))

Fully Update

I'd suggest fully updating, which includes everything in Windows Update as well as the most recent version of IE with all associated updates for XP (8, I think). It works for me here on both my IE7 and IE8 XP VMs. I no longer have an IE6 VM so I am unable to check that.

UPDATE: Downgraded a VM to IE6 and it still works. I'd run filezilla.exe directly and see what the error is.

Thanks for the reply and

Thanks for the reply and advice, John.

Everything is fully updated in Windows XP with the exception of IE which is has been on version 6 since day one and was only ever updated with the associated security updates from Microsoft. (The reason for this is that I never use it for web browsing as I far prefer Firefox.) However, since you have been able to get it to run on your VM with IE 6, then that doesn't seem to be the issue.

Considering the recent "complaints" I've been reading about Filezilla since the latest update to 3.9.0.5, I'm considering moving to an alternative FTP client anyway. It's too bad because I really liked Filezilla and have been using it for many years.

I'll certainly give 3.9.0.1 another shot though and run filezilla.exe directly to see what happens. Otherwise, I'll just keep 3.8.0 around as a backup. Smile

The Answer

It's an Unable to Locate Component problem:

"This application failed to start becasue Normaliz.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

Since re-installing did not fix the issue, where can I obtain Normaliz.dll and what directory should it be in?

Unicode, Install IE8

I think that file is supposed to be within system32 and is used for normalization of Unicode strings. I'm not sure, though. A couple references online mentioned it being included with later IE versions. I can also confirm it is present on my Windows 7 box as well as my XP VM that I downgraded to IE6.

It's important to keep in mind that installing IE7 and then downgrading to IE6 will NOT put the OS back to the state it was in before IE7 was installed. So, it working on my VM is not an indication that it would work in a vanilla XP install with IE6 that was never upgraded.

I recommend XP users install specific optional updates within Windows update. This includes things that are intuitive like the "Update for Root Certificates for Windows XP [November 2013]". But it also includes things you may not consider like IE8 with all updates and Windows Media Player 11 with all updates. Why? Because IE and WMP aren't separate independent apps. They're part of the OS. And updating them gets XP a little bit closer to Vista in terms of the overall components and bits available to software you install on XP, which means that it is more likely to work.

So, I'd suggest you update to IE8. It will update the internal components used by Windows to do some networking including those used by Windows Update, the PA.c Updater/App Store, apps that embed a browser like RSSOwl and similar. It will likely get FileZilla 3.9.0.1 working as well.
