I cannot reproduce this error on my Windows 8.1 and Win XP machines.
From your OS Version, I guess that you use Windows Server 2008.
There are many possible reasons for an access violation error, some of them including driver or hardware failures, even viruses overwriting your memory may do this.
If you don't mind, would you please try the original portable version from here:
http://www.9bis.net/kitty/?page=Download (should be fully portable without modifying your system).
If the error still occurs, it may be a bug in the base app that can only be addressed by the base app's developer.
