Google Chrome Portable 38.0.2125.104 Portable Passwords, Please Help

Good Day,

Please Help.

Re: Google Chrome Portable 38.0.2125.104

Could You Please tell me what I have to do to get Portable Passwords,
namely what are the steps to be able to use the Passwords from one PC in another PC.

I have tried to follow the instructions from the GoogleChromePortable.ini file without
any success:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PortablePasswords=false
; Stores your saved passwords using a master password you select on startup,
; working around Chrome's normal mechanism of tying saved passwords to a local
; user account. This setting causes a prompt for the master password on
; every startup so it's opt-in.
EncryptPortablePasswords=true
; Uses a master password to re-encrypt passwords. If this is false, Portable
; Passwords will be insecurely stored as plaintext, but you will not need to
; use a master password. You may find setting this to false useful if you
; already use an encryption solution such as TrueCrypt to store
; GooglechromePortable.
;
; If you want to change any of the following:
; - The Portable Passwords algorithms, salts, or implementation in such a way
; that would break your existing Portable Passwords (through an upgrade of
; Google Chrome Portable that changes these).
; - Your master password, or lack of a master password.
;
; You can keep your Portable Passwords by first ensuring that your passwords
; have been successfully imported into your Google Chrome profile with the
; local user account. To do this, simply start GCP before upgrading it or
; changing your password or Portable Passwords settings. Then, delete the
; master password hash in Data\settings and the Portable Passwords files in
; your profile (by default, there is only one in Data\profile\Default. A
; power user with more than one profile will have one for each profile).
; Next, perform the upgrade, or change the settings, if you wanted to. Now
; run GCP and enter a new master password (or the same one, but it CAN be new
; if you want). Once you close Google Chrome the new Portable Passwords
; database will be constructed using your saved passwords from Google Chrome.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank You Very Much,
Roberta

PortablePasswords=false means disabled

With PortablePasswords=false, you have the feature disabled.

You need to copy the INI file from Other\Source to the base GoogleChromePortable directory. You should use it with encryption enabled either with a password set for Google Chrome Portable or on an encrypted drive like the PA.c Carbide.

Personally, I recommend using Firefox Portable as it works without all the cruft to support portable passwords in the app itself. Plus it has proper certificate management that isn't tied to the local PC either.

Thank You Very Much for your reply

Good Day John,

Thank You Very Much for your Greatly Appreciated reply. Smile

I had already done as You indicated (copied ini file to the base directory, & set PortablePasswords=true), But still doesnt work.

I dont know which files to delete as per:
"Then, delete the
; master password hash in Data\settings and the Portable Passwords files in
; your profile"

Thank You Very Much,
Roberta

PS:
Agree, as my main browsers are Firefox & Portable Firefox,
while Portable Chrome is a fallback option... Smile

Working Here

I did a fresh install of GCP. Copied the GoogleChromePortable.ini file to the GoogleChromePortable directory next to GoogleChromePortable.exe. I then opened the file and set PortablePasswords=true. On next launch it prompted me to set a master password exactly as it should.

Note that if you place the file anywhere else or change its encoding from ANSI to something else, it will fail. Notepad++ and some other editors will 'upgrade' the encoding from ANSI to UTF-8 automatically by default which will break every INI file's ability to be used with the Windows APIs.
