Virtual Machine on Portable Apps

Maybe Xen, or Microsoft Virtual Machine, or VMware
Probably Xen because it is GNU

Aniway it would be great to install your favorite OS on a stick into Portable Apps this way.

This would be more useful on

This would be more useful on a portable HD, not a memory stick, due to the sizes of the files involved...

However, there is a launcher for virtual box

Search 'virtualbox portable' on google...(first link, would post the link here, but not sure if I'm allowed ;))

It downloads the virtual box software and runs it like the apps here...

Oh you mean this

Oh you mean this one?

http://www.vbox.me/

:))

I wouldn't be worried about usb stick sizes.

Right now talking about Usb flash drives sizes becomes more of an excuse Smile

mine is 16 Gb now that is small.

in 2 more years 128 will be the standard.

not the size but speed

is the question here.
Ther is virtual box portable and you can run from there what you want, but how long are you prepared to wait until ubuntu did boot up? The speed of the controllers in the sticks is very limited and often the flash chips are not very fast either. This is the limitation.

Otherwise google for usbuntu, this is complete vbox with ubuntu installation and test it. no practical use for that since all so slow and operating system needing read and write all the time is then so fragile it will last not for very long and the virtual machine is broken and you can start again with installation.

Then disk files on full installation are very big, thus reasonably the stick would have to be formated in ntfs to avoid the complexity of splitting the virtual drives into too many slices. This again is not very healthy for the stick and may bear other problems with rights etc sometimes.

From protable hard drive, well it may work somehow, but all is not portable because of all the drivers needed (admin rights needed to start portable virtual box)and also the maximum speed might be then limited only by the usb2 speed and by the controllers and flash chips in the usb sticks.

Speed is not an issue if you use the exFAT file system

Speed is not an issue if you use the exFAT file system on a USB stick rather then FAT32 and/or NTFS!

different

this is misunderstanding in a way as what the above article is talking about. Readyboost is concept of supporting certain windows functions and has nothing to do with the actual read write speed by of the media. It is also not relevant if you have exFAT or ntfs or what ever, the speed of usb stick is given by the controller included in the device. Just very secondary it might be limited by the type of flash chips included and at higher speeds also by limits set by the usb serial protocol.
exFAT is just other virtual file system on the top of the flash file system which will not change just because someone decided to place other virtual system on the top of it.

in this above linked article I found:
>This file system is mainly designed for usb flash drives and other external devices in order to transfer files between computers and the devices in alot faster speed!

Yes thats the one

Yes thats the one...vbox...

I was thinking more on the speed also...

Yes, running it from my portable HD, it asks for admin rights, although I am not sure if that is windows limiting the HD (because even things like copying files to it needs admin rights...) or if Virtualbox is asking for admin rights...

virtual box

need admin rights itself, since it needs to install drivers and this can be done in any case only with admin rights.
In the case of portable vbox, the attempt is done to remove the drivers at the end when portable vbox is closed. It looks that it does work, I did not check that so deeply myself however.

as for your portable hard drive: if you formated it ntfs and formated in a PC, then this might be problem. If you format it while extern (portable) there should be even in the case of ntfs formating with 'no security' and not needing rights later.

There is only one launcher

There is only one launcher that I know of that lets you use VMs portably and without admin rights. It is called OS Launcher Portable. It works on my school netbook without any problems. It comes with some free, open source VMs built in that you can download and play straight from the application. You can also configure your own Virtual Machines, including official ones like windows. All VMs will launch from Quemu that is portably built into the application.

no vm

well it is not really a a VM launcher, but this other story.
It runs live systems from their iso files.

The whole problem is, that for the quemu to work properly, one needs a driver called quemu accelerator on the host pc otherwise the thing will be so slow that becoming useless.

And to install quemu accelerator one needs admin rights again.

It is noce to run small linux distros, but even with bigger systems like ubuntu, it is becoming rather theoretical.

what about uses like andriod x86

i want to get android x86 to run with a default config on any machine... i can get it to be a "default config" but the issue is putting it on any machine... i want them to just click an executable and it will start of the OS (in this case android x86) it would be nice to not have to need admin rights... but if needed i can manage....

i want this to work cause then at the place i am working i can set up apps that only come on android on my fellow co-workers PCs and have them personalize it on an individual basis

and i don't need it to be only on a USB device... i will probably put it on the HDD anyway so i don't care about speed or size needed

The Power of our future is technology itself

you need virtual machine

first you need a virtual machine unless you want to either install it on the target real machine or boot the real machine from a bootable portable media containing the android x86 operating system.

Booting a machine from a bootable media could be the most easy, however one has to observe todays problems as some machines will need to UEFI boot system and this again will need signed parts to be compatible with the UEFI subsystem.

To install it into a virtual machine is simple too. However to have a virtual machine easy transportable between different hosts is not so simple as current operating systems will try to prevent programs (and virtual machine environments are such) to access any hardware directly.

Number of drivers will be definitely needed to be installed on each host machine the virtual system is supposed to be used on.

You can install on all pc in question for example the VirtualBox and then you can simply import a copy of prepared virtual machine running this operating system to all computers.
