I am having a frustrating time getting jPortable 7 to work with either portable Chrome and Firefox. Sites that I visit that require the java runtime environment do not work. The browser says "Couldn't load plug-in". Everything is installed the way it should in my thumbdrive with Java in the Commonfiles directory.
I'm using Chrome version 38 with jPortable 7 Update 71 and Windows XP. It used to work a few days ago then something went wrong.
In Chrome, I checked for Java with chrome://plugins/ and it is enabled.
Any help would be deeply appreciated!

I just tested in my XP VM with the current Firefox and jPortable 32-bit and it works without issue. Be sure of the following:
- You've updated to Windows XP SP3. Anything earlier is unsupported by just about everything
- You've installed every critical, important and recommended patch
- You've updated IE to the latest version and Windows Media Player to the latest version. This will update some core components of Windows required by some applications
It worked on Chrome as well, though there is no prompt to give it permission. You have to right-click and select Run.

Everything is updated to Windows XP SP3 including patches up to the point when Microsoft stopped sending patches in April including IE and Media Player.
I came across a sort of fix for this after fiddling around with the Java Control Panel under CommonFiles\Java\bin\javacpl.exe. After running the control panel I went to the security tab and clicked the Enable Java content in the browser. When I applied this setting something ran in the background then I went back to Chrome tested a game that runs under Java and it worked but with a drawback. It seems it installed itself into my local browser (Firefox) in my computer too with a plugin and also installed the resident jqs.exe (Java Quick Starter) that starts up now every time I start Windows.
Now I don't know how to remove the jqs.exe and unclicking it in the java control panel doesn't work either. Since it's now running as a local service each time I boot up will deleting jPortable cause errors when I reboot?
Did this PC happen to have a previous version of Java installed locally that was set to disable the browser component? As mentioned, I'd tested on a clean XP VM (no Java or other software ever installed, just updated to XP3, all patches, and IE7).

I've never installed Java in my local computer. jPortable is the only java I've used.
Sharing this website you have problem with might provide more information. Does it only occur with this one Java website or every site?
