Auto Software Update on Startup

Hi,
I would really like a setting to auto update programs on startup. I use papps to keep software up to date on some youth club computers and in some local high schools and it would be much easier if I could just set it to update whenever it is started. Hopefully I am not missing a setting that does this already Smile
Thanks!

It Does

It's under Options in the Advanced tab. And it's configured to check by default as you start the platform up.

No, that is to check for updates, not to automatically update. I need it to update with no prompts from the user.
thanks

Single Prompt

It's only a single prompt to ensure you're OK with it using your internet connection and that you won't have access to that list of apps until it's done. You click Next and then minimize it and keep working. Updating without prompting would require disabling access to those apps without letting the user know or something similar.

Again, this is on a lot of computers, over 100, not just one. I really don't want to have to stop to click ok each time when with a simple option it could to it with no prompt. Maybe I am the only person who would use this but I doubt that. I would bet a lot of users would switch to it. Most don't care about keeping older versions of software.

Slowdown

It's not about older versions. It's about the fact that it prevents you from using the apps while it's updating them and slows everything down when you update apps on an external drive. External flash drives with one controller, with only USB 2.0, or with a lower quality USB 3.0 component setup will see all the apps you run slow to a crawl while other apps are updating. Plus, the platform and updater are separate right now, so you wouldn't know which apps are about to be updated and could run one, which would cause the updater process to halt at that point to ask you whether you wish to close the app or cancel the install of it.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

ok, but these are on the computers on a fast connection so why would that matter to them? It would simply make it MUCH easier to use portable apps across many computers. A sub item under the check at startup, auto install or something similar, would allow those of us who are not limited by slow speeds to use it more conveniently. You shouldn't restrict everyone because some people have slow speeds. It wouldn't be much of a code change either, just skip the install list ok prompt and go straight to the installs, which can already be cancelled from that page. While portability is a big factor in software like this, it is also important to make it easier for people to keep the software up to date. Several of the other portable programs out there have already made this change. I just asked here because I've been using this for years.
thanks

Optional, Already Planned, Dependent on...

I thought you'd meant make it a default originally, which wouldn't be appreciated by a huge number of users. Adding in an automatic mode is already planned at some point. I can have the updater skip the prompt and automatically minimize fairly easily. It was actually on a list of features I planned to add but dependent on one bug-fix and one feature addition.

First, to fix the bug where an issue installing a single app halts the updater until you dismiss the error.

Second, to add the feature to show all license agreements at the beginning, that way you're only bugged once. I may couple this into the automatic part and, if running in that mode, update all the other apps first and then show the license request just for the apps that need it. So, if you have 5 apps to update and 1 has an updated EULA you must agree to before installing, it'll install the first 4 and download the 5th and then prompt. That way, it does as much as it can when unattended and will only need to wait to do the installs that it has to.

Later, I can have the platform and updater communicate better and disable access to certain apps as the updater runs. This will be particularly important in conjunction with auto-run to ensure that if there's an update for Firefox and the user has Firefox set to autorun it'll update first and then run it.

Ok, thanks for the reply. Any idea when it will be implemented? or is it a back burner issue?

Exclude Apps

Hello,

is there a way to exclude a specific app (or as next step, app version) from update check? I have for examples issues with PidginPortable, as Version 2.10.10 does not work with my Intranet Messaging Service anymore, so I probably will have to stick to 2.10.9.

With the update mechanism, the chance is high that I will accidently update it any time... Maybe it could save the state of checkmarks?

Kind regards, grrrmml

rename the folder

If you rename the folder the PortableApps updater should ignore it.

At Windows Startup?

If you mean that you want it to automatically check for updates when you start Windows, your best bet is to use the Platform's (default) "Check for updates… On platform startup" setting, and set the Platform to start with Windows (the Platform Setup has a checkbox for this when installing locally).
