Pchat All data has been lost!

Hey there, don't know where you really want this, but I had Pchat open not sure of version, not the newest, you will see why, for 24 hrs I was waiting on a person to show up and give me an answer on a game irc. So I left to take someone to work came back 20 minutes later and see a message on my WinXP Pro, by the clock that says something to the effect of, "error writing to disk" I think it said, then went on to say there was an error writing pchat something quakenet something I missed some of it, and then said all data has been lost, Now my question is before I unplug it what are the suggestions on recovery including what program if any? I keep opening My Computer and see the drive and the portableapps Icon and it says, PortableApps.com (H), but when I open it low and behold NOTHING! Properties says 0 bytes. I need to recover no need to say why, I'm sure You all know why Lol....Um Help?

Hardware

This is generally indicative of a hardware failure with the drive or with the PC's connection to it. You could try the drive in another box.

Next steps.

Hi John Thanks, so what should I try in order, Safely Remove Hardware and maybe try it in the same pc again, or a different one, or try to use maybe a file recovery program before I disconnect it? which I have heard of Recuva but don't see a portable here, they do on their site, or how does that compare to that Wise Data Recovery in your mind? or something else? Oh and what about an Image or cloning program?

Likely Dead

When flash drives die, they usually just die, so your data may simply be unrecoverable. Try it on another PC. Data recovery tools like Recuva are meant to recover corrupt or erased files. They can't connect to a flash drive's memory chips when Windows can't see them.

Your best bet is to locate your last backup.

Maybe

It might be I know a lot of things are possibilities. Thing Is I don't use it much, I don't often use menu, I just open folder and run the .exe I Only use Moneymanager and Gramps, and hardly ever run gramps, Been over a year, I run moneymanager about 1 or 2 times per week load in my receipts or whatever then close it. and almost always "safely remove hardware" then plug it in next time, I just happened to run pchat for the second time in a couple of years, I think this happened before with pchat. Anyway after a lot of reading I wonder if the data might be in a pagefile or cache or some such thing, I only had my browser and pchat open I keep it fast mean and lean, it's old so start up and ipod junk is AL off. I had it on for 24 hours and it either got to much info or leaky memory or anything is a possibility. And given the error, it gave a directory I would have thought it might have lost either pchat or anything that was done in pchat since I started it and not the entire contents of the drive ): I know losing the entire contents isn't a far reach given its a flash drive and how software and hardware work in the first place. Its been a little while since I backed up in fact so long or so much data was put in it would be impossible to even get close to where I was, .... Sadly. as Usual. I kept a list of programs and versions that were on it though. I read I could try to make an image of it first even if it's corrupted or whatever then try to recover from that, but can't remember or find again if it were Testdisk/photorec or Trueimage that said it for usb drives. I have been looking again for a couple hours on a different computer I have yet to shit the other one down or disconnect the flash drive.
