4.3.4, XP, old CPUs: Did 4.3.4 fully fixed the SSE2 issue of this thread?

For the current, 4.3.4 (hopefully non) issue, please look at the bottom, later messages.
Prevoius, 2nd, Subject of this thread was:
Installing 4.3.1, XP: Fatal Error, cannot be started, enableExtension fail
For an old, 4.3.1 issue, please look at, roughly, the message at the middle.
Original, 1st, Subject of this thread was:
Installing 4.3.0 on XP: encountered an error and needs to be closed.
http://i.imgur.com/KOkvxdC.jpg
LibreOfficePortable_4.3.0_MultilingualNormal.paf
It start to install. Let me choose the language, remove extra languages, and choose install location. Does some work. Creates some directories and files. Then it terminates with the error message in the picture.
I then wiped what 4.3.0 did and installed LibreOfficePortable_4.2.5_MultilingualNormal.paf successfully.

4.3.1, XP: Fatal Error, cannot be started, enableExtension fail

The installation problem of 4.3.0 seem to be solved by 4.3.1.
LibreOfficePortable_4.3.1_MultilingualNormal.paf has another problem.
Still on XP: installed with removing extra languages enabled. Finished the installation without running the application. Every time I run LibreOffice afterwards, I get:

LibreOffice 4.3 - Fatal Error
The application cannot be started.
Extension Manager: exception during enableExtension

An image of the error message window is at http://imgur.com/IFlFZEO.jpg

Working Here

It's working without issue here on my fully-updated Windows XP SP3 virtual machine.

Keep in mind that Windows XP should be fully upgraded to SP3, all patches from Windows Update should be applied through the day Windows XP was end-if-lifed, and the most recent version of Internet Explorer should be installed (not because you're going to use it, but because it upgrades parts of Windows). Those are the best ways to ensure that software that hasn't explicitly dropped Windows XP (usually by switching to a newer compiler like FileZilla) continues to function as long as it can on this discontinued OS.

I think my XP Home is as up to date as it can be. LO bug?

It is a fully updated SP3 XP Home Edition. Windows Update runs in the background, downloading whatever it says so. I think it still does something from time to time, perhaps just security issues.
IE is version 8. Again, Windows Update downloaded whatever it considered appropriate. It, IE, is

Version 8.0.6001.18702
Build 86001
Update Versions: 0

Since 4.3.1 is not working for me, I am using 4.2.5. Here, 4.2.5 opening screen has an extensions button, near the left bottom corner of the screen. When I clicked it, an IE with http://extensions.libreoffice.org/ page was opened.

Local Install

A (temporary) local install would help determine if the bug is in LO itself or our packaging. Have you tried LO Portable 4.3.1 without removing additional languages? If not, please do and we can eliminate that as a factor. Also, what is your full install path so I can see if that is playing any role.

For getting work done now, you should be able to install the 'Still' branch which is at 4.2.6-secfix now. We're now officially supporting it and automatically updating it from the platform. You just need to enable 'Show Advanced Apps' in Options to see it. It's just a temporary workaround as that will be switching to 4.3.x in another month.

Same issue with extra languages. Path was C:\LibreOfficePortable
  1. Had the same issue while not removing extra languages. Path was C:\LibreOfficePortable.
  2. Indeed LibreOfficePortablePrevious_4.2.6-secfix_MultilingualStandard.paf seem to work.

Local

How about a local install, just temporarily? That will help us confirm that your PC isn't working with LibreOffice itself.

Just to clarify

By asking you to try a 'Local Install' John means to try installing the non-Portable version by running the official LibreOffice installer from LibreOffice.org/Download.

Good Point

Now that the platform is designed to make it easy to install locally, we should clarify 'local install' to 'install the standard non-portable version' temporarily to see if that works so we can be sure it's an issue with the app itself and not our packaging of it.

There is a (slightly?) different problem with the app itself

Local installed LibreOffice_4.3.1_Win_x86.msi.
Custom install:

    1. Without any Optional Components.
    2. User interface languages: only US English.
  1. LibreOffice will not be set as the default application to open any MS office file types.
  2. No start link on desktop.

Installed version is 4.3.1.2.
When running the newly installed app, there is a twist with the error message, compared to the error by the portable app. http://i.imgur.com/G3x5nvX.png:

LibreOffice 4.3 - Fatal Error
The application cannot be started.
Extension Manager: exception in synchronize

Twist is in synchronize vs. during enableExtension

4.3.2 portable cannot be started: exception in synchronize.

LibreOffice 4.3.2 portable is installable. It can not be started.
There is a synchronization exception: http://i.imgur.com/ZxJBpny.jpg. Just like 4.3.1-msi. No twist. Haven't tried local install.

Ever Had Malware

Has this machine ever had a malware infection of any sort? Is there enough RAM? Is it using an older CPU? That's really the only other things I can think of that would prevent the app from running.

Could be an application - LibreOffice, not packaging, bug

I hope there isn't, and never was, malware. This is the sort of things one can never be sure of. It is an old machine: mobile AMD Athlon XP2400+ 518MHz, 704 MB of RAM. It does manage to run many, or some - depending what one consider many, up to date, major portableapps applications. It also runs successfully LibreOffice 4.2.6.3.
I have tried LibreOffice_4.3.2_Win_x86.msi. Tried the minimal installation configuration: no dictionaries, only US English. In particular, I didn't asked to install any of the 4 extensions. I don't know if those extensions are related to the problematic extension manager. Installation succeeded. But the application could not be started. Extension Manager: exception in synchronize.

Not the RAM

On a hunch, I thought perhaps it was the RAM, but LibreOffice ran fine in my XP VM when set to 704MB. I'm not sure if the 12 year old CPU is an issue or not. It could be that specific things in LibreOffice are compiled only for more modern CPUs, I suppose. Just a shot in the dark. I know Chrome will not refuse to run on older CPUs.

Old CPUs and XP

I've recently started to run into problems for XP with SP3 not being able to run programs. They have been newly compiled programs which now require a CPU that supports SSE2.

Calibre and Sigil are examples. Also programs using QT5 are suffering from this. Portable CPU-Z will show if the processor supports SSE2.

Almost forgot, my CPU is OK, and I'm running LibreOffice 4.3.1

If the problem is SSE2, the compiler shouldn't be using it

Here, CPU-Z reports SSE, but not SSE2. Unless I didn't understand where to look, or something else is wrong.
If SSE2 is the problem:

  1. How LibreOffice run on new Linux installations that might use an old CPU?
  2. I think it is a LibreOffice bug, or the compiler that is used to compile it. If LibreOffice states XP is supported, they should anticipate CPUs that don't support SSE2. So the compiler should be able not to use it.

Are portableapps compiled from source?

Publisher Compiled, Old Machine

The publisher itself is compiling it, so it's likely required by the app itself is that is the issue. We don't recompile LibreOffice nor do we plan to. SSE2 was introduced back in 2001 with the Pentium 4, so that's likely the minimum CPU. Apps often have both a minimum OS and a minimum CPU requirement. Although your CPU was launched a year later, AMD did not license SSE2 for inclusion, so your CPU is closed to a Pentium 3 in that regard.

There may very well be a Linux version compiled specifically to still work without SSE2, but the official one probably requires it if the Windows one does, too. Lots of apps compile for SSE2 now without giving it a thought.

I'd ask over at LibreOffice to be sure. It could just be that 4.2.6 will be the last one that runs on your 12 year old machine.

The way I read the link you supplied, they are working to fix it

If I understood the link correctly, they are hunting down SSE2 occurrences.

4.3.4, XP, old CPUs: Did 4.3.4 fully fixed the SSE2 issue?

An extremely short, go no go, test suggests the SSE2 issue from above is fixed. Anyone with a more detailed information?

Good question

having a hard time trying to interpret the info. Only recent info seemed to be related to 4.4.0 Beta 1.

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/4.4.0/Beta1

and Bug 82430 which does not appear to be closed.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=82430

So not sure if "everything" is working in 4.3.4 ????

Haven't had chance to download 4.3.4 and try it yet. The bug report might point to things to try to see if work.

Are there test files to download? Is Predim4.ods downloadable?

Are there test files to download, together with short, and simple, instructions, to make a fixed-not-fixed short test for non developers?
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=82430#c34 mentions a simple test for Predim4.ods. I assume, but unsure, it tests an SSE2 related issue. Is Predim4.ods downloadable for everyone? Where from?

Not sure about that file

Not sure about that file, but the last tests just seemed to be trying to use several of the file formats that libreoffice supports. The problem seemed to be dealing with .xls for Excel spreadsheets. Which would seem to indicate possible SSE2 involvement.

PAc just bundles libreoffice for portability. You really need to ask at The Document Foundation, they are the experts on what libreoffice is doing.
