Bug, or what? FF was outdated but didn't see any updates...?

When I went into Help>About> the other day, I noticed my portable Firefox was outdated (said 34.0.0, not 34.0.5) and it said that my Firefox was up to date, which I knew was incorrect. I know the .5 release included a critical fix for a vulnerability that was found... so it's kinda scary I was going a few days without. I tried it a few more times, had no luck finding an update through this so I manually updated through portableapps.com...

I'm just curious what might've caused that updater to stop catching the new version...? Was this a bug, or was my install possibly tampered with?

What language is your Firefox?

What language is your Firefox?

I have Firefox installed on a Windows 7 computer and also use FirefoxPortable.

My installed Firefox says it is version 34.0.0 and *IS* up to date.
My Firefox Portable says it is version 34.0.5 and *IS* up to date.

o.0

If 34.0.5 was an important bugfix then surely my installed version would update when I check for a new version?

What I *think* is the difference (that is causing the mix of up-to-date versions) is that the installed Firefox is (I believe) the default Firefox English (US) version, while my PortableApps version is the Firefox English (GB) version.

Why? I don't know Blum (I have some add-ons different between the versions, but add-ons shouldn't be a cause for Firefox to not see a new update version?)

If you are worried and want to update, why not download the latest version of FirefoxPortable and install it over the top of your current FirefoxPortable?

Cautious people would backup (copy the folder?) FirefoxPortable before updating Smile

Good luck Smile

ps: found the release notes for 34.0.0 and 34.0.0.5

ps: I found the release notes for 34.0.0 and 34.0.5

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/34.0/releasenotes/
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/34.0.5/releasenotes/

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the security fixes are the same in both releases. The difference between release notes is in regards to default search engines.

I'm guessing, but I suspect that if a Firefox Language version 34.0.0 doesn't need/get the change in search engines, it doesn't automatically update to 34.0.5.

pps: I just remembered that I manually update (download and install over existing copy) my FirefoxPortable every time there is a new release, so that would explain why my version has been updated to 34.0.5. Because that is the version I downloaded and used to update Blum

pppps: ah-HA!

this blog explains it much better than my ramblings

http://blog.ffextensionguru.com/2014/12/02/firefox-34-0-0-vs-34-0-5/

For the United States (en-US) and Russia (RU) builds, user have the option to changing over to the default search engine upon first run of Firefox 34. For en-US users this is Yahoo and for RU users this is Yandex. Since this change is optional, user who update from an earlier version of Firefox (33.1.x or 33.0.x or older) will be updated to Firefox 34.0.0. Users who download and install a fresh copy of Firefox will have Firefox 34.0.5 which for the en-US and RU builds will have the new Yahoo and Yandex search engines as default.

I hope that helps Smile

Sorry for the delayed reply...

Thank you all for your quick replies... my apologies for being a bit delayed in my response.

Looks like you were right in that the security fixes were added in both of the builds. Still would be nice to see the version numbers sync up a bit better... but based on what you've said, it's really a non-issue.

Appreciate the replies.
