A friend gave me a flash disk with folders that are EXE. They were originally normal MP3 and Jpeg files inside the folders. I am not sure what happened and why they are now EXE but I would like to retrieve them. These folders are from 2004. Any idea why it happened and how it could be fixed.

I remamber we had something similar many years ago, caused by a virus. It is long time ago, so I do not remamber the name of the virus.

is that we did delete all and recovered the files from our backup.

Have you tried renaming the folders to be without the .exe extention. That may be all you need to do.
You need to have Windows Explorer configured to show file extentions.
