I need help. Some how I lost permissions to my flash drive. I cannot access any of my files on any computer. Can anybody help me. It is a portable hard disk formated in NTFS. Thank you for any advice you can give. I also don't know enough to use linux to recover the files.
What do you mean by 'lost permissions'? Is your system setup so only admins can access ums devices, while you only have a user account? Please explain the problem in greater detail.
well have u tried slax ---> www.slax.org easiest linux to use viabootable CD!!!
thats why removables should not be formated with ntfs people can set permissions on them (really unsecure in portable enviroment)hope that helps

It's a hard disk, not a removable device.
Anyway, NTFS supports both Windows-style and POSIX-style permissions and Windows will honor them. The only way I know of preventing it from honoring the permissions in Windows (and possibly other OSes) is to convert from FAT or FAT32 to NTFS using the Windows utility convert.exe with the /NoSecurity switch. You should be able to access all files on the disk with an admin account. I wish I knew another way because I need to make my first partition the same way. I converted my USB stick a while ago, and have not had problems, even with only guest permissions.

can this command run backwards from NTFS to FAT32 or FAT?

Its pretty much of a one way ticket.

Right. If it could, I would have simply converted to FAT32 and then back to NTFS with the /NoSecurity switch to remove permission checks on my first partition.

Thanks for all the fast advice. I was able to slowly transfer all my data to a smaller flash drive then format my hard disk and restore all my data with linux.
