[Fixed] GPG Plugin with Thunderbird and Seamonkey

GPG_Plugin_Portable_2.0.27.paf.exe
ThunderbirdPortable_31.5.0_Rev_2_English.paf.exe
SeaMonkeyPortable_2.33.1_English.paf.exe
enigmail-1.8.1-tb+sm.xpi
PortableApps.com_Platform_Setup_12.0.5.paf.exe
Windows XP SP3 with SSE2, SSE3 (yeah, shopping for new laptop)

On both Thunderbird and Seamonkey after using enigmail and closing cannot do 'Safely Remove Hardware'. Using Task Manager find that gpg-agent.exe is still running. End process and now can do 'Safely Remove Hardware'. Note: Before upgrade to new Thunderbird, Seamonkey and enigmail would also get multiple istances of gpg2.exe leftover. Thanks.

[ UPDATE] Have confirmed this also happens on Windows 8.1. gpg-agent.exe remains active even after enigmail and Thunderbird or Seamonkey are closed. Cannot eject thumbdrive till end process.

confirmed

this is because the rather useless agent is now mandatory component of the gpg2 and runs as service to enable the gpg for all programs in via the system.
This is supposed to be installed inside the operating system and run all time as service.
To make it portable will result in problems like this.

My solution: avoid this bloatware gpg2, use the standard single exe gpg and some older version of enignmail. This will also not push you to use the GPG/MIME, which anyway hardly anyone uses.

I already have a fix coming later today for this.

Fixed in GPG 2.0.27 Rev 2 and Thunderbird 31.6.0

This is fixed with today's rev 2 of the GPG plugin and Thunderbird 31.6.0. The GPG plugin now has a special EXE to handle proper shutdowns and the Thunderbird launcher will now run it on exit when you have GPG in a findable location. It's separated out so if we ever need to update the shutdown method, we can push a new version of the GPG plugin without needing to update every app that uses it.

The same code will be included in the next SeaMonkey release. The bug will remain open until then.

findable location

can the gpg2 be installed into the TB folder so it can be used without the platform?

Same / Updates

You can manually install it to the same place as before (ThunderbirdPortable\App\gpg). It's better to use the platform, of course, as you otherwise won't know when it's out of date.

Fixed in SeaMonkey 2.35

This is now handled with today's release of SeaMonkey Portable 2.35 as well.
