Portable Apps backup fails

The backup routine provided with the Portable Apps Suite used to work, now it fails just after it starts, and says to 'check your configuration'. Any ideas? The backup path exists.

I do not see where to set any other configuration parameters.

Reinstall it

This usually occurs after an av program removes something it shouldn't. (usually 7za.exe) Grab PortableApps Suite Base Edition and install it right over your current copy. You won't lose any data except any changes you made to autorun.inf (will be fixed in an upcoming upgrade process) and a theme (which isn't yet supported).

Hmm

What directories are you going from and to? Does the file name already exist? What options (7z vs Zip, etc)?

Different Drive

If you're backing up the whole drive, the destination can't be on that same drive.

Different Drive

The usb portable backup is to the hard drive, not the usb drive. It has always worked in the past, just fails now. It says to check the settings, where do I do that? All the paths are correct.

It is not overwriting an existing backup.

Hmmm

Can you try resetting the options and running a new backup from scratch? Within the directory PortableAppsBackup\Data just rename settings.ini to settings.bak and then run PAB again. It'll come up with the defaults.

Hmmm

No dice. Despite these few annoyances, Portable Apps is still great, and I wonder how I lived w/o it...

[PortableAppsBackup]
BackupDirectory=DOCUMENTS\PortableAppsBackup
Use7zFormat=0
UseMaxCompression=0
ShowBackupDetails=0
BackupDrive=1
BackupData=0
BackupDocuments=0

Debug build?

I can give you a debug bit that would allow you to see the call to 7za.exe and any error messages it generates if you're up for trying a couple more things. That way we can nail it down and I can get it fixed so it won't happen for anyone else.

duh

I ran error checking on the usb drive the other day, no issues.

As a last resort, I ran it again this AM, and guess what, cross-linked files.

Once I fixed the errors on the usb drive, the backup runs fine.

I formatted the drive again, reloaded all my software from a good backup, everything runs fine.

Better error messages would be nice, but isn't that always the case...

Thanks for all the help John
