I have found a media player that works from a portable drvie so far without modification. It is the VLC media player. I see right now though for someone to just unzip it to a portable drive it weighs in at 34.4 MB. But, it is just one of the many possibilities out there. There is also mplayer, which should work, but from the latest build, I don't see a gui present. But then again these are just some suggestions for possible media players.

off my usb stick. Thru trial and error I found that the only files you need out of the package is the entire plugin folder, the vlc.exe and the vlc.exe.manifest. I also used UPX on the EXE and the DLLs in the plugin folder to bring the size down to 6.40 MB. I then run it with the command switches "--no-plugins-cache" "--config=vlcrc" To stop the program from writing to the docsandsettings folder or registry. These turn off the plugins cache and sets the config file to a file called VLCRC in the application folder.
For startup it takes about a 30 seconds to a minute than from a regular install, but I have used it for many different kinds of video and audio including DIVX, XVID, AC3, Windows Media. all necessary files are included.
A good program for the size after shrinking it down.

I've been using VLC for a while now on my USB key as well using "--vlm-conf vlmconfig --config vlcconfig --no-plugins-cache" as the command line parameters. Works nicely.

I found out that I could add it in the Pstart properties screen from a how to on another site.

You could try either Alternative Quicktime or Alternative Realplayer, although I don't know if they could be portable.

There is a Music Player called "1by1" http://www.mpesch3.de/ ...
It plays MP3 and can be upgraded with WinAmp Plugins to play other musicfiles too.
1by1 is only 97kb big.
My favorite media player is Media Player Classic (http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli).
No install, just one .exe file, and it can store its settings in an ini file in its directory.
This is a very small and and full-featured portable media player that has a local configuration file within it's directory. It plays a variety of file formats - music & video - and even lets you download codecs into its directory to play certain files. This player features different skins and is only 1 meg in size (zipped). I've been using it for some time and it works great.

Is the best audio player in my opinion. It can play almost any kind of music with plugins, but supports mp3 and Ogg right out of the box. It is already portable as well, no modification needed. Just unzip to USB and run!
