There's seemingly no search function for this forum, and I don't have time to search one by one through the countless pages of posts, so I'm posting a new question.
Anyway, as per the title, Google Chrome Portable won't update. Every time I go to about:chrome, I keep the error message
Update failed (error: 1)An error occurred while checking for updates: Update check failed to start (error code 1: 0x80004005).
I did a Google Search but the first link either wasn't helpful or I didn't understand it well enough, and the rest of them didn't really address my issue as far as I could tell.
Or is it that the portable version of Chrome is not capable of updating? Because that's...really not cool... :/
That's by design. Unlike Firefox, Google Chrome doesn't have an updater. It relies on a separately installed Google Update package which must be installed as a Windows service. In other words 100% the opposite of portable.
Just use the PortableApps.com Platform and it'll let you automatically update Chrome (all 3 channels + 64-bit) and over 300 other apps.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
That's awesome. I mean the fact that PortableApps.com can update for you. The fact that Google made it the way it is is stupid, frankly. Really shows how much they care about users having control over their own tools. (Go figure.)
Thanks, though.

What do zombie string theorists crave? Branes!
I think it's more about consolidation than control. One Google Update setup handles Chrome, Earth, Picasa, etc. Apple does the same thing with their Windows apps.

Oh, I didn't know that. I thought it only updated Chrome. In that case, yeah I can understand that. Hooray for judging without thinking!
